DORSET, ENGLAND: Mike Hodges, the British director of 'Get Carter', 'Flash Gordon' and 'Croupier' died in Dorset, England, aged 90 on Saturday, December 17. A cause of death has not been revealed.

The news of Hodges' death was announced by his longtime friend and producer of 'I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead', Mike Kaplan, according to Variety. Hodges made several British gangster crime dramas, including 'Pulp' in 1972, which was named one of the year’s 10 best films by the New York Times and Time magazine.

Not much is known about Hodges' personal life except that he is survived by his wife Carol Laws; his sons, Ben and Jake Hodges; and five grandchildren, Marlon, Honey, Orson, Michael and Gabriel.

Screenwriter Brian Lynch also announced Hodges' death, writing on Twitter, "Mike Hodges, director of FLASH GORDON, has passed. Finally saw this movie during the pandemic and it brought me such joy. Have watched it a bunch of times since. Nothing else like it. Rest in Peace, sir."



 

Tributes poured in on social media after the news of Hodges' death surfaced. "Flash Gordon and Get Carter were incredible films. Both classics of different genres but both quirky, high octane brilliance," one user wrote. Another said, "I recently had a rewatch of my 4K Blu-ray of #FlashGordon a week or so back. What absolutely sad news." "Did some amazing stuff. Flash is a bonkers film. Get Carter a personal fave too. RIP Mike," one user said.



 



 



 

"I've seen Flash Gordon many atime, as it was one of Mom's laundry movies back in the day. It's epic and has great music. RIP Hodges," one user wrote. "I met him when he came to show his personal edit of A Prayer For The Dying at my university at the behest of the Media Studies dept. He generously entertained every question I had on the differences between the released movie and the source novel," another user said, adding, "Plus I got to thank him personally for the Flash movie."
