'Horribly insensitive!' Outrage after NYT crossword resembles a Nazi swastika on first day of Hanukkah

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Hanukkah spoilt by an honest mistake? Hundreds of readers of the New York Times were taken by surprise after their crossword puzzle on Sunday was allegedly resembling a Swastika, that too on the first day of Hanukkah - Sunday, December 18. The puzzle's silhouette has caused outrage on social media with several notable people coming forward to express their discomfort with the whole situation as it is widely recognized for its appropriation by the Nazi Party. 

One such person to get angry over the controversial crossword puzzle was Donald Trump Jr who wrote, "Disgusting! Only the New York Times would get Chanukah going with this is the crossword puzzle. Imagine what they would do to someone who did this and was not ideologically aligned with them? I’ll give them the same benefit of the doubt they would give those people… EXACTLY ZERO." While it can be considered a coincidence, the Internet believes that it is the most recent example of the paper's alleged history of anti-Israel rhetoric. The outlet has not yet commented regarding the same. Moreover, history has repeated itself as back in 2017, NY Times tweeted, "Yes, hi. It's NOT a swastika. Honest to God. No one sits down to make a crossword puzzle and says, "Hey! You know what would look cool?" reported Daily Mail.

Outrage after NY Times crossword puzzle looks like Swastika

One user wrote, "The whole puzzle is an amazing tribute to Hitler." Another angry user tweeted, "I know this is making the rounds but think it needs to be amplified. Seriously @nytimes?! First day of Hanukkah and you have a crossword puzzle in the shape of a swastika?!" One more user wrote, "This feels like the starkest warning to date, on this first day of Hanukkah 2022. Historians, take note." While another user said, "Horribly insensitive!"

One user tweeted, "Well this is.....a swastika @nytimes. This is a swastika on your crossword puzzle today. On the first night of Hanukkah. There's no way y'all missed this." Another user wrote, "Other people have pointed out that the @nytimes crossword has an interesting layout this week. I thought, “There’s no way this actually made it to print.” I had just bought the print copy… and we’ll shit. I did nahtsee that coming. (This is real, I just took the photo)" One user said, "This is not the first, but 2nd time in the last 5 years the @nytimes managed to run an "accidental" swastika crossword puzzle preceeding a Jewish holiday."
