WASHINGTON, DC: Marjorie Taylor Greene's attire to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address was a matter of discussion across social media platforms. Now, MSNBC analyst Matthew Dowd has claimed that her attire can be compared to "Tonya Harding in a fur coat."

The political analyst claimed in a discussion on MSNBC, "It underlines, as well as Tonya Harding in a fur coat last night screaming at Joe Biden, there she is. I'm surprised she didn't have somebody go after somebody with ice skates."

Who is Matthew Dowd?

Matthew John Dawd, 61, is a popular political commentator and strategist. He was the chief strategist for the Bush–Cheney 2004 presidential campaign and was an ABC News political analyst. Dowd is an alumnus of Cardinal Newman College in St Louis, Missouri, and was born in Michigan.

Dowd began his political career as a Democrat, as a member of Senator Lloyd Bentsen's campaigns. He was a chief strategist for George W Bush's re-election campaign and was a senior adviser to the Republican National Committee in 2002. Dowd has also worked as the strategist for Arnold Schwarzenegger during his 2006 reelection campaign.

In September 2021, Dowd announced his campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Texas as a Democrat. He was married twice, first to Tammy L Edgerly and later to Nikki. However, he is currently a divorcee and has three sons, as per Wikipedia.

'Tonya Harding in a fur coat' reference

The commentator meant that Greene's attire was similar to Tonya Harding's. The comparison was made due to the former skater's love for fur coats. In fact, when Margot Robbie played Harding in 'I Tonya', the designers made sure not to stray from the brief. According to Glamour, the movie titled 'I, Tonya' based on Harding's life featured a certain number of coats that were worn by the lead character. The outlet stated, "A young Harding fashions her own fur coat out of rabbits that she hunted with her father, a MacGyver-like solution to the problem of not being able to afford to buy one like her skating peers. Harding’s coach, Diane Rawlinson, is frequently seen sauntering around the rink in a luxurious fur coat. And despite living in poverty, even Harding’s mother wears fur, a design choice based on interview footage with the real-life LaVona Golden, who Johnson suggests likely got dressed up for the occasion."

'At least Tonya Harding had some legitimate talent'

The Internet quickly reacted to the comment. Popular columnist Michael J Stern tweeted, "Oh @matthewjdowd , if I did not already follow you, I would now. Brilliant."

A social media user added, " Absolutely perfect comment on Deadline White House by @matthewjdowd to describe MTG’s performative behavior last nigh5 at the SOTU address:”she was Tonya Harding in a fur coat!”

"I was watching it live and I lost it . It was perfect and @NicolleDWallace thought so as well, she couldn’t stop laughing !!!," claimed another. A user added, "At least Tonya Harding had some legitimate talent."

Another noted, "Let’s not insult Tonya." A user questioned, "Is she in a bar or what…wait..cheering on a rodeo?" "That’s a perfect comparison!" wrote a user.
