Who is Maggie Barton? Catholic school fires gay teacher for kissing her girlfriend
DENVER, COLORADO: A gay teacher from a Catholic school in Colorado was reportedly dismissed from her position after the school authorities found out that she was in a relationship with another woman and saw a picture of her kissing her girlfriend. Maggie Barton, of All Souls Catholic School in Englewood, Denver, was terminated from all her duties for reportedly breaking her contract on January 25.
Meanwhile, authorities justified their actions by stating that all teachers are expected to sign a contract assuring that they will live their lives in conformity with Catholic Church beliefs. Following her dismissal, a student's parent, Kathy Weisbrod, created a GoFundMe page to assist Barton in making ends meet. The page had raised more than $25,000 at the time of writing.

Who is Maggie Barton?
Maggie Barton is a teacher who taught technology and media and also coached basketball at All Souls Catholic School in Englewood, Denver, for six years. Barton taught kindergarten through eighth grade before being fired. She has now spoken of the outpour of love and support that she has received from the All Souls community, calling it incredible and overwhelming. Barton grew up in her home state of Texas, where she attended Catholic schools. She went to Bishop Lynch High School. “It is the faith I was raised in, and I wanted to teach in a catholic school because I wanted to share those values that I learned and the experience that I had with future students,” she remarked to CBS News during an interview.
Maggie stated, “It's hard for me right now to figure out how to navigate what my faith looks like because of all this,” during an interview with Colorado Public Radio. Despite living openly as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Barton added that she had been careful not to post images of herself with her partner on social media. Barton said she came out to her family during her freshman year at St. Edward's University in Austin. In 2017, Barton accepted a teaching position at All Souls. She expressed her passion for teaching, “I just absolutely fell in love with it. I was like, ‘This is what I’m supposed to be doing'," in an interview with Fox31.
Pope Francis’ statement
The recent event comes after Pope Francis, just last month, stated that laws criminalizing LGBT persons are a sin and an injustice since God loves and supports those who are attracted to the same gender. “The criminalization of homosexuality is a problem that cannot be ignored. Persons with homosexual tendencies are children of God. God loves them. God accompanies them ... condemning a person like this is a sin. Criminalizing people with homosexual tendencies is an injustice,” he remarked.
