A host of top global celebrities have condemned the US Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe V Wade ruling of 1973 in the last few days. However, in the latest, Pope Francis strongly condemned abortion after he sat for an interview with Reuters. The 85-year-old pontiff compared terminating a baby to “hiring a hitman” to solve a problem.

Pope Francis spoke from his Vatican residence during an interview with Reuters sharing that he respected the Supreme Court's decision on abortion. Pope Francis’ comments came after a week of the US Supreme Court making it legal for states to ban abortions. It will allow individual states to permit or limit the procedure. The Head of the Catholic Church's latest remarks comes amidst the rumors of him resigning which he later dismissed.

Pope Francis sheds light on the overturning of Roe V Wade ruling

In his interview with Reuters, Pope Francis strongly condemned abortion. Shedding light on the same, he said, “I ask: Is it legitimate, is it right, to eliminate a human life to resolve a problem?” This is not the first time when the Bishop of Rome drew a controversial comparison. Way back in 2019, Pope Francis speaking at a Vatican-sponsored anti-abortion conference, said, “Is it licit to throw away a life to resolve a problem? Is it licit to hire a hit man to resolve a problem?"

During his 90-minute interview with Reuters, the Pope was also asked about a debate in the US over whether a Catholic politician who supports others' rights to choose abortion should be allowed to receive Communion. Speaking on the same, the Pope said, “When the Church loses its pastoral nature, when a bishop loses his pastoral nature, it causes a political problem. That's all I can say." This comes after House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi was barred from receiving Communion at churches in her home diocese of San Francisco back in May.

‘The Catholic Church has no credibility in this conversation’

Social media users took to Twitter to slam the latest remarks of Pope Francis. “Nostradamus prophetized this would be the last Pope. I co-sign it. It's because the Catholic Church Falls. Saying an abortion is like hiring a hitman? Really @Pontifex? The church would have already fallen if not for abortion because of child predators alone”, said one user as another chimed in, “He doesn’t have a uterus so he isn’t welcomed to comment. Also-the Catholic Church has no credibility in this conversation either.”

One user tweeted, “Pope Francis Says Abortion is Like 'Hiring a Hitman'. I say "Sending children to church is like peddling them to perverts.” Whereas, another shared, “The leader of the Catholic church, the Pope, said that abortion is like "hiring a hitman." And you wonder why members of the Supreme Court, and those who put them there, are rabid about abortion?” The next one posted, “What I’m getting from this is that pope francis has hired a hitman before” as, another concluded, “@Pontifex whatever you wish to call it, it is a "problem" to be decided by a woman and her doctor, not the government, not the pope, not the church or any other interfering zealot who decides to make a woman's sovereignty of her womb, his business.”
