Elon Musk's humanitarian work is not a secret. The Tesla honcho donated multiple millions to various causes including the Future of Life Institute which researches safety in artificial intelligence. He has also signed the Giving Pledge which is a commitment to give away at least half of one's money to charity even though he hasn't made the pledge letter publicly available on the program's website.
His brother Kimbal in many ways shares his determination to help humanity and donate to causes that are close to his heart. Apart from working towards his goal to revolutionize the food industry, Kimbal also made heavy donations in favor of Republican lawmakers who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump.
Who is Kimbal Musk?
Kimbal is a chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist. His personal mission is to work towards providing access to real food for all Americans. He has been named a Global Social Entrepreneur by the World Economic Forum. He is the co-founder and chairman of three real food companies that are rapidly scaling across the US.
Kimbal turned to the food industry after helping Elon launch his successful tech companies. The 48-year-old sits on the board of both Tesla and SpaceX and is the fifth-largest individual stockholder in his older brother's company. He gave up his full-time job starting companies to create a concept that ties a restaurant business to nonprofit work.
Kimbal and his business partner Hugo Matheson started The Kitchen Community in 2011. Together they have built 200 "learning gardens" in underprivileged schools. They build modular planters in school playgrounds where students can grow their own food while learning about healthy eating habits. For example, Kimbal said that a middle school in Los Angeles was using Doritos and Cheetos as a reward for good behavior -- until it installed a learning garden. Now, children get strawberries as a treat.
Like Elon, Kimbal Musk has big ambitions and he along with Matheson hope to expand to 100 communities in the coming 50 years. That "might take my life. That's a long time, but that's okay," Kimbal said. "Food never ends. It's one of the greatest things about working on food -- we're always going to need food," he added.
Kimbal donated to 10 GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach Trump
Kimbal is no fan of Trump and he hasn't shied away from publicly calling the former president out on several instances. "Donald Trump is a traitor to his country. Treason is treason. I trust in our govt to prosecute him accordingly," Kimbal wrote, one day after the insurrection at the Capitol. Ten Republican House members voted to impeach Trump in January for inciting the Capitol siege on January 6.
New filings by the Federal Election Committee (FEC) showed that Kimbal gave $2,800 to each of the 10 lawmakers on January 26, the day that the House transmitted the article of impeachment against Trump to the Senate. The donations were filed in Boulder, Colorado, where Kimbal lives and owns a bistro. The 10 GOP lawmakers who voted for Trump's impeachment collectively received $6.4 million in donations in the first three months of 2021.

Kimbal Musk's net worth
As of April 2021, Kimbal is at least worth $543 million. Kimbal sold $8 million of Tesla stock on April 1, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Kimbal Musk disposed of 12,000 shares, or 2% of his total stake in the electric vehicle company. He still owned at least 611,740 units of stock after the sale. The same day, Kimbal offset his sales by exercising stock options that allowed him to buy 12,000 Tesla shares for about $77 each - a total cost of $890,000. His compensation as the Director of Tesla Inc is $20,000.

Kimbal is married to Texas billionaire Sam Wyly's daughter Christiana Wyly since April 7, 2018. The couple shut down the reimagined Dallas restaurant Cedars Social on their wedding day to celebrate their reception. According to an attendee, it was an "intimate" affair with 100 people which included friends, family members and other dignitaries including Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.
