That one scene in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 has us convinced two major characters won’t survive
Hawkins is set to witness the ultimate showdown between the Party and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) in the series finale of 'Stranger Things.' Volume 2 of the sci-fi hit finally reveals Vecna's (Jamie Campbell Bower) true goal of reshaping the world while also uncovering the long-hidden truth behind the notorious Upside Down. Meanwhile, the gang comes together to devise a final plan to stop Vecna once and for all, a move that ominously hints two fan-favorite characters may bid farewell, and honestly, we're not ready for it.
The characters in question are Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Kali (Linnea Berthelsen). In the penultimate episode of 'Stranger Things,' Season 5 Volume 2, Kali reveals a disturbing truth to Eleven after being rescued from the military's Upside Down base. She discloses that Dr Kay (Linda Hamilton) had been exploiting Kali solely for her blood, transfusing it into pregnant women in an attempt to create more children like her.
This confirms the government is repeating the same secret experiment that originally produced Henry Creel, aka Vecna, Eleven, Kali, and others, as per TV Line. During an emotional conversation, Kali tells Eleven that the cycle of government-created monsters will never truly end unless both of them die, because labs can be rebuilt, leaders like Dr Kay can be replaced, and Eleven can never truly escape.
Even a peaceful life with Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Kali warns, would only be temporary before the government hunts Eleven down again. In a chilling moment, Kali warns Eleven that their fight against Vecna is part of an endless loop, saying, "Don't you see, Jane? It's a cycle. A terrible, vicious cycle." She believes the only way to truly end it is through sacrifice, adding, "But we can stop it tonight. … After we kill [Henry], after the children are rescued, we don't leave with the others. We stay on the bridge. When the Upside Down vanishes, so will we. It is the only way, Jane. The only way."
The emotional exchange between Kali and Eleven is abruptly cut short when Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman) interrupts, leaving their fate unresolved. 'Stranger Things' creators Matt and Ross Duffer addressed speculation about character deaths, making it clear they are not interested in killing characters purely for shock value. Speaking to The Independent in November 2025, the Duffer Brothers explained, "We just always want to think ahead and not just do it to shock people or because people have a bloodlust, which they seem to have." They clarified that any death must serve a larger narrative purpose, adding, "We want to make sure that if someone dies like Eddie, who we killed last season, his death resonates throughout the course of Season 5."
