While talking about her book 'Unfinished: A Memoir', Priyanka in an interview said how her parents always taught her to never give up or break down. "The one thing that my family definitely taught me was nothing can break you. You might feel like you're very close to being broken, but you're self-sufficient enough that nothing can break you,” she said.
Madhu Chopra
Dr Madhu Chopra was a doctor in the Indian Army. She left her career and almost forced Priyanka to take part in the Miss India pageant. She convinced her and also had to convince her in-laws who were mostly in the Indian army and very protective of the women in the house. “This was another compromise I made. I really wanted her not to miss the opportunity. They were like, ‘Forget about your career, and go with Priyanka.’ I didn’t even think twice before leaving my career for her because I thought I had enjoyed my life, now if my company will help her build a good future, I will do that,” Madhu said in an interview.
Priyanka Chopra and her mother remain inseparable and are often seen together at events around the world. Priyanka and Nick Jonas gave birth to their daughter Malti Marie Jonas. She named her Malti honoring her mother whose middle name is Malati. Likewise, Marie is Nick's mother Denise's middle name.
Ashok Chopra
Ashok Chopra died in 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Like Madhu, he too was a doctor in the Indian army. He was a very protective father as Priyanka says he would never let her go out late at night to her meetings when she was 18. "At that time, it made no sense to me. I was like, 'Why [are] you trying to clip my wings? I'm my own woman. I'm 18!'" Priyanka tells ET. "Daddy was like, 'No… Whatever you wanna do is great, but while you live under my roof, you're not taking meetings at night. Daytime meetings. One of us will be there. Your manager will be there,'" said Priyanka. She credits her father's protective approach for shielding her from many of the negative experiences that women often encounter in the entertainment industry. Nowadays, if she were to face a similar situation, Priyanka asserts that she would promptly shut it down, without trying to appease anyone.
She shared a heartfelt "miss you" note for her father on his death anniversary last year on her parents' marriage anniversary. She often shares posts on her Instagram account on her father's death anniversary like the one below.
