MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA: A number of celebrities have seemingly turned their back on Twitter after the launch of Mark Zuckerberg’s long-anticipated text-based app. Pitched as Instagram's "text-based conversation app," Meta’s new app, Threads, was unveiled on Wednesday, July 05, a day before its supposed release date.

The app has been billed as a formidable rival to Twitter, with some techies referring to it as a “Twitter killer.” Threads is a free app that Meta describes as a place where "communities come together" to debate subjects using text, which sounds a lot like Twitter. ''Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what'll be trending tomorrow,'' the app description says. On Wednesday, the 39-year-old Zuckerberg welcomed netizens to his new social media platform with his first Thread, which read, ''Let's do this. Welcome to Threads."

Threads’ special features

According to Meta's blog post, the new messaging app will allow users to follow other users' "threads" in addition to sharing recommended material made by unknown authors in their personal feeds. The tech giant further stated that Threads is developed “with tools to enable positive, productive conversations,” and people will be able to manage who is mentioning or replying to them within the app. “Like on Instagram, you can add hidden words to filter out replies to your threads that contain specific words,” the blog post said, adding “You can unfollow, block, restrict or report a profile on Threads by tapping the three-dot menu, and any accounts you’ve blocked on Instagram will automatically be blocked on Threads.”
