Vin Diesel takes charge of a new action movie, and it’s based on your favorite childhood game
Vin Diesel is gearing up for a brand-new action project. And this time, he’s stepping into the ring with two of the most iconic toy fighters ever made. As the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise inches toward its long-promised final chapter, Diesel is now confirmed to star in, produce, and write the upcoming ‘Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots’ movie, bringing the classic tabletop boxing game to life on the big screen. Originally announced in 2021, the film has been quietly developing under Mattel Studios, with Diesel involved through his production company, One Race Films.
But according to a new report from Deadline, Diesel’s role has expanded significantly: he’ll now be writing the script himself, in addition to headlining the adaptation. The live-action film will center on the beloved Red Rocker and Blue Bomber robots. The characters are instantly recognizable to generations of players who grew up slamming plastic buttons to knock their opponent’s head off. With Diesel now taking charge of the project, the story seems set to focus more on characters than audiences might expect from a toy-based action film. Speaking about it, Diesel shared his excitement.
“I am excited to expand the Mattel universe by bringing this classic toy from my childhood to a modern audience by telling a story that examines the role of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance that dares to reveal the power of compassion at its core,” he said. Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer, praised Diesel’s expanding creative role. “Vin is a powerhouse storyteller with an unmatched understanding of action, heart, and world-building,” she said. “His creative vision for ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots’ is bold, human, and deeply cinematic — exactly the kind of storytelling we love at Mattel Studios.”
When the project was first revealed, the script (penned by Ryan Engle of ‘Rampage’ and ‘The Commuter’) reportedly centered on a father and son forming an unlikely bond with a high-tech war machine. With Diesel now rewriting the screenplay, it’s unclear whether that plot will remain or evolve into something more emotionally grounded. As per ScreenRant, the original ‘Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots’ game debuted in 1964 under Louis Marx and Company, designed by Marvin Glass and Associates. Its straightforward premise, two players controlling red and blue robots in a boxing ring, turned it into a cultural staple for decades. Mattel then redesigned and reissued the game in the 2000s.
And following the massive success of 2023’s ‘Barbie,’ which grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, Mattel Studios has been accelerating its lineup of live-action toy adaptations. Among the upcoming titles are ‘Masters of the Universe,’ slated for release on June 5, 2026, and ‘Matchbox,’ starring John Cena. Meanwhile, Diesel’s flagship franchise continues to hover in development limbo. ‘Fast & Furious 11,’ billed as the saga’s final installment, has faced repeated delays tied to budget concerns and shifting production plans. Diesel said in October that the major hurdles had been cleared and filming could begin before the year’s end, but the movie still doesn’t have a firm release date.
