'When I was the Most Beautiful' Episode 6: Hwan and Ye-ji don't give up on Jin, will they uncover the truth?
'When I was the Most Beautiful' Episode 6 begins on a heartbreaking note as Hwan (Ji Soo) is called in to identify a body and find out if it is his brother Jin (Ha Seok-jin). The body that he sees is of a man whose face is entirely scarred and he realizes that this is not his brother. Since the race, no one has heard from Jin and so, Ye-ji is among the few who have been waiting for his return without believing that he might have just died after an unfortunate crash. It is 2017, three years since the accident and we see Ye-ji get ready for her first exhibition as a newbie ceramic artiste.
However, things do not go well for her. Her mother-in-law, who seems to be grieving her son missing for three years, takes out her anger on her daughter-in-law and her husband. She breaks both their works and makes a huge scene that horribly reminds Ye-ji of the day her father died. She passes out but Jin's mother doesn't worry about how unfairly she is treating Ye-ji or the fact that she is being a hypocrite who continues to work for her company while she expects her daughter and her husband to suffer the loss of their son.
At this moment, Ye-ji's mother is also released from jail and Ye-ji hears about this from Attorney Ryu after all that went down at the exhibition. She tells the attorney that she is not interested in hearing about anything that has got to do with her mother. She also tells the attorney that it was not she who cut off all ties with her mother but the other way around. Ye-ji's aunt also tries her best to ensure that Ye-ji and her mother do not meet, however, after Ye-ji watches her neighbor Da-woon bond with her mother, she begins to miss her own and decides to give their relationship one last chance.
In this attempt, she meets attorney Ryu again to get the address of where her mother works currently and at this time, pictures of Ye-ji get clicked with Ryu. Is her mother-in-law looking for Ye-ji's weakness to kick her out of the family? Even we cannot help but wonder how Ye-ji is connected to Ryu, but before that, it is also important to understand how deeply traumatized Ye-ji is because of her father's death.
From the few flashes we have seen of the incident, it seemed as if Ye-ji's mother and father had been struggling with the gun which went off amid the chaos. Her mother hadn't intended on killing, but the same happened and rumors of Ye-ji's mother having an affair with another man began circulating. So when Ye-ji finally meets her mother and asks her why she had to abandon Ye-ji and why she wouldn't meet her, she is told that her mother was not interested in answering any questions that Ye-ji had for her. In fact, she was extremely harsh as she told her daughter not to return to her place of work.
As an ex-convict, it is hard for Ye-ji's mother to find a job so she tells her daughter that she doesn't want to lose the one that she has right now. She also stresses how she doesn't ever want to see her daughter again. All of this because Ye-ji's mother was told by Ye-ji's aunt that her daughter's in-laws are not aware of Ye-ji's past, so she doesn't want to be an obstacle in her daughter's life. Be it in the past or in the present, Ye-ji's mother had always acted in her daughter's best interest. However, whether it helped Ye-ji is something that she must ponder upon.
In the meantime, after the scene that Ye-ji's mother-in-law caused at the exhibition, she arrives at Ye-ji and her father-in-law's home in the countryside. She creates another scene, shows Ye-ji pictures clicked with Attorney Ryu and warns her that she will not let it slide if Ye-ji were to make another mistake. Her mother-in-law doesn't even allow Ye-ji a chance to explain the situation. She tries to hold all her frustration in but is not successful and so she leaves home with her passport. So her father-in-law who arrives home later finds things astray and calls Hwan to inform him that Ye-ji might have left to see him.
It also seems as if no one at home is aware of Hwan's efforts to find his brother. After seeing Carie's conversation with the driver who also raced in the same competition that proved fatal for Jin, there is definitely something fishy about Jin's accident. Will Hwan be the one to unearth the truth and considering the family hasn't found his remains, could he really be alive?
