'Street Fighter' teaser turns heads at Game Awards, debuts full cast with 50 Cent among the big reveals
While the desire to see their favorite game adapted for the big screen has been a constant among SNES-era players, many had been somewhat skeptical of the 1994 'Street Fighter' version starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The movie, however, went on to become a sort of cult classic for fans, grossing approximately $99.4 million worldwide in theaters. Now, over three decades later, the new trailer for the 'Street Fighter' reboot promises another round of high-octane, nostalgia-fueled action.
The 'Street Fighter' reboot teaser was unveiled at the recently held Game Awards, Gizmodo reported. The first look transported viewers to the energetic neon-lit landscape of the early 1990s, backed by Joey Valence and Brae 'Punk Tactics'. The teaser has been compiled with equal parts of martial arts bravado and a uniquely goofy approach that indicates the tone of the upcoming movie. Helmed by Kitao Sakurai, who directed the Netflix comedy 'Bad Trip', 'Street Fighter' is scheduled to arrive in theaters in October next year.
Paramount Pictures and Sakurai have assembled a diverse cast that brings together a few traditional players alongside some surprising selections. Noah Centineo stars as Ken Masters, and Callina Liang will be seen as Chun-Li. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa'i plays Akuma, Cody Rhodes portrays Guile, and David Dastmalchian appears as M. Bison. The rest of the cast includes Eric André as Don Sauvage, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Orville Peck as Vega, and Jason Momoa as Blanka.
Joining the above-mentioned artists will be Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, and Kyle Mooney as Marvin. Lastly, the character of Cammy will be portrayed by Mel Jarnson. Those who have played the game on their Nintendo would remember the stream of constant action that became a hallmark of the fighting game. The same approach is evident in the new 'Street Fighter' trailer. Stylistically, the cinematography and lighting of the trailer bear a strong resemblance to the latest game in the series, 'Street Fighter VI', as revealed by Kotaku.
The official synopsis of the upcoming film reads: "Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don't, it's GAME OVER!" Initially believed to be released by Sony Pictures on March 20, 2026, in association with Legendary, the upcoming movie was removed from Sony's 2025 release calendar after their deal with Legendary expired. Paramount Pictures subsequently entered into a new distribution agreement with Legendary and is now set to release Street Fighter on October 16, 2026.
