What is the dangerous TikTok Fire Challenge? Destini Crane, 13, ended up in the ICU with severe burns
PORTLAND, OREGON: Another day, another TikTok challenge that takes over someone's life. People experimented with a variety of things in 2021 while being confined at home. But when individuals went beyond their bounds and started using fire in their homes, things went a little too far.
The TikTok trend known as the 'Fire challenge' resulted in third-degree burns on the 13-year-old Portland resident Destini Crane. Jack Jerry's TikTok account appears to be where the TikTok Fire Challenge first appeared, as reported by Distractify. The TikToker had already uploaded a number of videos showing him handling this challenge with ease. However, a major drawback to this challenge was the extreme exposure to fire and the risk of getting badly burnt that teenagers disregarded, resulting in life threatening scenarios. On May 8, 2021, Jerry — a model, gymnast, and actor — posted his "fire mirror" challenge on TikTok that became known simply as the Fire Challenge on the platform.

What is the Fire Challenge?
In the TikTok Fire Challenge, individuals are shown applying hairspray to a mirror in a shape, and then igniting it while keeping the lights switching off. Although the TikTok challenge has some incredibly lovely visuals, it has proven to be one of the most dangerous trends, especially when performed in a small area where it could go horribly wrong. This was seen in the case of 13-year-old Destini Crane.
What happened to Destini Crane?
On May 13, 2021, Destini Crane was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with third-degree burns after attempting to recreate the popular TikTok Fire challenge. Destini's right arm and neck sustained major burns as a result of the incident. During the time of the operation, she was also unable to speak.
Destini's family claimed that the teenager was filming a video in the bathroom when they heard her screams and saw that "everything was on fire." Her mother stated that the seventh grader was attempting to imitate a TikTok video challenge wherein shapes are drawn on a mirror using flammable liquid and set on fire to produce a fire-lit sigil or alphabet.
Kimberly Crane, Destini's mother stated, "Destini was on fire. When I went and opened the bathroom door, everything was on fire. I was in the living room talking with my mom, and I heard her scream my name. Things in the bathroom were on fire," as reported by ABC7. The Crane family used this tragedy to warn other parents to spend more time with their children and to keep an eye on what they are doing online.
