The Burning Pile Challenge on TikTok gained popularity among social media users in 2021. People were seen quickly transitioning while rocking to Mother Mother's 2008 song 'Burning Pile' along with brandishing a lit lighter close to their faces.

In 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic made people feel a little out of place, and the song 'Burning Pile' seems to have accurately captured how everyone was feeling a year into the pandemic. The lyrics from the song 'Burning Pile', "Throw my troubles at the world again. It goes, all my troubles on a burning pile..." were the lines that a majority of TikTok users lip-synced to. However, one prop that was used to start the craze gave it a dangerous edge. The trend helped the Indie rock band, which has been producing music for more than 10 years, to expand its audience.

What is the Burning Pile Challenge?

Similar to other TikTok trends, the Burning Pile Challenge had a transition with individuals lip-syncing to the said song. The one thing that sets the trend apart from others was that it required people to brandish an open flame in front of their faces using a small lighter.

TikTok users would begin their videos by lip-syncing while dressed casually and swiftly transition to another dramatic music video while carelessly holding a lighter close to their faces. As part of this trend, some TikTok users showcased their makeup, while others dressed as fictional characters. However, TikTok user Madi Monroe's video showed that using a lighter carelessly could result in burning one's own hair.

'YOU SHOULD'VE PUT ON HEAT PROTECTOR'

Monroe's 'Burning Pile Challenge' TikTok video garnered a lot of attention with over 14 million likes and 300,000 comments. Another social media personality, Lea Elui, commented, "THATS WHY I AM NOT EVEN TRYING TO DO THIS TREND."

Australian model Harvey Petito commented, "OMG THIS WOULD SO BE ME." One concerned individual commented, "YOU SHOULD'VE PUT ON HEAT PROTECTOR," to which Monroe responded by writing, "THE FUNNY THING IS I HAD IT IN MY HAIR BUT ALSO A BUNCH OF PRODUCT I LITERALLY SCREAMED LOL." Many more people reacted with an "Oh My God."
