Amidst the fast-paced world of the emergency room at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC), countless patients come and go. However, the lingering presence of death forever remains waiting to strike at the most opportune moment. The recently aired sixth episode of 'The Pitt', which aired at 12:00 p.m., featured the unexpected death of a favourite character, one that shook even hardened medical professionals like Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby to the core. Here's everything that happened.

Louie Cloverfield, played by veteran actor Ernest Harden Jr., was introduced in Season 1 of the R. Scott Gemmill show. He was depicted as a compulsive alcoholic who had to be brought into the ER after he was found unconscious. Once he was treated and discharged, he soon found his way back a second time, since the first thing he did after leaving the ER was to get a drink! Suffering from a serious case of liver cirrhosis, Louie couldn't bring himself to quit alcohol. Moreover, his character was also instrumental in unearthing Dr. Langdon's problematic prescription drug abuse habit.

In Season 2 of the HBO show, Louie waited his turn in the PTMC triage, complaining of a nagging toothache. Despite his pain, he appeared to be his usual jovial self. Once, after Gerran Howell, Dr. Whitaker administered a process of draining fluids from his abdomen, he was seen lying contentedly, never missing an opportunity to crack a joke. However, it was not the happy ending we expected. The conclusion of the sophomore season's fifth episode saw Louie losing consciousness as the monitors beeped loudly. Dr. Langdon rushed to the rescue, only to find that Louie had flatlined. Despite urgent attempts to reuscitate, Louie breathed his last shortly after 12:00 p.m. on 'The Pitt.'

Taking a moment to reflect on Louie's death, Dr. Robby revealed that the patient was forever traumatized by the death of his beloved wife, Rhonda, who was killed in a car crash just a month before delivering their baby. Louie's death was attributed to the fact that he suffered from a case of pulmonary embolism, in which a blood clot travels to the lungs and prevents them from ensuring normal blood flow. The fact that Louie suffered from liver cirrhosis didn't help. Speaking in an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Howell recently opened up about Louie's death on the show, highlighting the daily struggle between life and death that medical professionals must endure. The actor commented, "Life and death is a big thing in the ER, especially with Louie because he is one of our frequent flyers and has become a staple in the hospital. I think everybody thought Louie was going to outlive us all." 'The Pitt' season two airs new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max
