'We are Who we Are' Preview: Episode 2 will focus on other families and teens at the base, especially Caitlin

After the Fraser-heavy first episode devoted to the new family moving into the base where we form the first impressions of this unconventional family unit with Sarah as the ambitious head of the family, Maggie as the dutiful spouse, and Fraser, their teen son, who is acting out, and often competing with Maggie for Sarah's attention. In Episode 2, we will spread out more and dive into exploring the other characters on the base, especially the family next door, the Harpers, and their daughter, Caitlin. Yup, the same Caitlin, who Fraser finds a kinship with at the end of Episode 1.

In the trailer, we see Sarah call Richard and Jenny, Caitlin's parents, "basic" people who can't provide what Caitlin a "complicated child" needs. But Sarah's approval of Caitlin seems to stir trouble in her own household as Maggie asks her, "Am I basic too?". We also see Sarah taunt Fraser saying, "Don't be jealous just because she like me". Maggie has to hold him back as he tries to attack Sarah.

We also see that Sarah and Maggie's relationship is not welcomed by everyone. Jenny is uncomfortable around Maggie but tries to socialize with her because she is also a 'military wife' but Richard tells her, "You know those women aren't good people".

Richard, a conservative military man, is also not happy taking orders from Sarah. This is evident when they sit down for a tête-à-tête about how things are run on the base. Sarah tells him that she doesn't care for the way things used to be run before she took command but that they were now going to uphold a "higher standard" while Richard looks at her stony-faced. 

Blonde Britney, who dragged Fraser to the beach in Episode 1 and is trying hard to get his attention, sees Caitlin as competition. So she asks her if Fraser and her are "a thing now". However, Fraser and Caitlin's bond seems to stem from Caitlin's experiments with her gender expression.

At first, Caitlin is hostile when she finds him following her, but later we see Fraser helping her draw a mustache on her face and shave her head. Both of them seem to be kindred spirits as they spend more time together. They bike together and go swimming and share heart to heart chats with Caitlin asking him personal questions like, "you've never kissed anyone, have you?" We also see Fraser forming a connection with a young soldier on the base, Jonathan.

Meanwhile, Caitlin's brother, Danny, is experimenting with Islam as he asks his friend, Craig, "Do you sometimes feel like you don't fit in anywhere?", with Craig telling him, "Don't talk like that". There is also some sort of celebration in the base and in the town with fireworks going off. Both the kids and the adults join in the festivities.

But the celebrations will also bring some jealousies and fights to the surface as we see a montage of several characters in some tense situations. There is a scene where a glass partition shatters and Fraser is shown crying furiously as he collapses against a door.

What might have caused him to react like that seems to be linked to his mother Sarah dancing with someone, possibly Jonathan, at the celebrations. We'll have to wait for the episode to air to find out. 

'We are Who we are' Episode 2 will air on September 21 on HBO at 10 pm ET.
