Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler avoid each other, fans call it 'biggest upset' of Oscars 2023

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens attended the Oscars 2023 three years after their breakup in January 2022, but seemed to avoid each other on the champagne carpet of the 95th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12. This left social media unhappy with one of the fans commenting, “Dear ABC producers… if you don’t do everything in your power to make Austin Butler stop by Vanessa Hudgens’ spot on the carpet then what is even the point of this pre-show?”

The pre-show saw the 34-year-old Hudgens, who recently got engaged to Cole Tucker, interviewing several Oscar nominees and attendees including Paul Mescal, Angela Bassett, and Baz Luhrmann. However, she didn’t interview Austin. Hudgens' co-host, Ashley Graham, interviewed him instead.

Graham asked Butler where is his girlfriend Kaia Gerber. To which he replied, as per People, "I’ve got my best friend here with me, who is also my agent. And I owe my career to him, so as a thank you, I wanted him to be by my side tonight.”

Following this, fans took to Twitter with one saying, "THEY LEFT AUSTIN FOR LAST INTERVIEW ON THE CARPET BUT SENT HIM TO ASHLEY GRAHAM WHO ASKS WHERE KAIA IS BEFORE IT LITERALLY CUTS BACK TO VANESSA TO SIGN OFF THE SHOW." While many expressed, "biggest upset of the Oscars is Austin Butler not getting interviewed by Vanessa Hudgens on the carpet." One more wrote, "They didn’t want to put Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens on screen together."

Inside Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens' relationship

According to People, Hudgens and Butler dated each other for from 2011 to 2020. They were first linked in September 2011 as they were photographed cozying up at a birthday party for Ashley Tisdale's sister, Jennifer. The former couple became Instagram official in August 2014 when Hudgens posted a birthday tribute writing, "Yesterday was the love of my life's birthday. Happy birthday to the man with the kindest heart, beautiful soul, crazy talent and best looks I've ever seen. He never stops inspiring me in every aspect of life and always lifts those around him up higher. I thank god so greatly for blessing the world 23 years ago by creating Austin Butler."

Why did Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler split?

Though Hudgens and Butler didn't publicly share why they broke up, a source told E! News, "They're just shooting on two different continents and it's a matter of distance." Hudgens spoke about the difficulties of long-distance to Cosmo UK, as per Marie Claire. She said, “It’s eight years this year – FaceTime, good communication, respect and trust [are what keep us going]. The longest we’ve been apart was four months. It sucks. You start hating hearing yourself say 'I miss you.' But if it’s your person, you make it work.”
