'Pride is every day': Fans rejoice as Velma joins LGBTQ+ clan in 'Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!'
It has been an open secret in the 'Scooby Doo' fandom that Velma is gay but sadly, it has either been watered down or never addressed in the past. Times have changed as it was recently confirmed that Velma of Mystery Inc has come out as gay in the new 'Scooby-Doo' movie titled 'Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!'
In a snippet from the toon flick, the brainy, and bespectacled Mystery Inc character is visibly smitten with another female. “I always thought it was a strange coincidence that all our cases seem to involve some supernatural creature,” Daphne (voiced by Grey Griffin), says. To which, Velma (Kate Micucci) replies, “But it wasn’t a coincidence these costumes were created by one person.” Enter Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco), the head of the notorious costume crime syndicate behind the creepy costumes. As Coco tosses her long white hair, Velma mentally surveys the scene and notes, “Incredible glasses!”, “Amazing turtleneck!”, “Obviously brilliant!”, and “Loves animals!” Next, we see Velma's glasses fogging up and her cheeks turning red.

According to Variety, in 2020, James Gunn (the writer of the live-action film 'Scooby-Doo') tweeted that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action movies. He wrote, “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

However, after the clip surfaced online the fans of the loved cartoon rejoiced as the open secret was finally confirmed. A fan said, "Stunning and brave, truly revolutionary and groundbreaking." A fan questioned, "Now that Velma is officially out gay, can the cartoon now admit that Scooby Snacks are really just cannabis edibles?"
A fan wrote, "It's called representation. Look it up. Queer kids exist. I knew when I was nine." A fan mentioned, "It doesn't, but it's like the new little mermaid being black. It validates and gives kids who are still kids, or who are now adults, validation and happiness to see themselves in a TV show that they love(d). Representation means a lot to people, especially those normally disliked."
A fan shared, "To normalize it. Kids see queer characters and they grow up seeing them as being just as normal and healthy as cis/hetero characters. It doesn't need to be a plot point, it can just be passive acknowledgment. Also, "Sex life" is not the only factor in queer representation." A fan tweeted, "Pride is everyday !!"
