The company developed ‘In God's Hat’ which gained acclaim and was completely sold out. In 2010, the New York Times wrote, "Given that the laconic characters of In God's Hat seldom waste their breath, it's tempting, to sum up, the play with a single word: terrific."

Pelphrey was born and reared in Howell, New Jersey, and began acting at the age of fourteen. He studied acting at his performing arts high school and later at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Pelphrey told The Hollywood Reporter, "I started drama school when I was 18.”
He had the opportunity to study Shakespeare at the Globe Theater in London while at Rutgers University.
