Netflix's ‘The Selection’: Release date, plot, cast and all you need to know about young-adult romance film by Haifaa al-Mansour

The streaming platform is collaborating with Haifaa Al-Mansour, Saudi Arabia’s first female filmmaker, for its upcoming film, ‘The Selection’

Netflix has upped its game by offering its viewers a range of young adult films. Following the success of its recent ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’, the streaming platform is collaborating with Haifaa Al-Mansour, Saudi Arabia’s first female filmmaker, for its upcoming film ‘The Selection’. 

Release date 

Netflix is yet to make an official announcement regarding the release date of ‘The Selection’. 

Plot 

‘The Selection’ is based on the first entry of Kiera Cass’s popular book series, which sold over 11 million copies worldwide. 

Set in a dystopian future, ‘The Selection’ follows 35 girls who are selected to compete against one another for a prince’s heart. America Singer is one of the many Prince Maxon’s suitors, who belongs from a lower economic class. The movie navigates her struggles as she needs to choose between love and her old life. However, with time, she grows feelings for the young prince.

The cast of characters for ‘The Selection’ is yet to be announced.

Haifaa Al-Mansour will be helming ‘The Selection’. Being the first female filmmaker of Saudi Arabia, she is known for her 2012 film ‘Wadja’, which garnered critical acclaim. She has previously worked with Netflix in ‘Nappily Ever After’. Haifaa’s other films include ‘Mary Shelley’ and ‘The Perfect Candidate’. 

‘The Selection’ will be produced by Pouya Shahbazian and Denise Di Novi with Margaret French Isaac serving as the executive producer.

News 

Pouya Shahbazian, who is known for ‘Divergent’, expressing her excitement about working with Haifaa Al-Mansour, told  Variety, “I’m thrilled to be working with the brilliant Haifaa Al-Mansour and our friends at Netflix on this special film. Having worked on some very high profile book adaptations, I’ve never before seen the fervor and passion that ‘The Selection’ fans have for the adaptation of Kiera Cass’ book series to film.”

Meanwhile, Denise Di Novi added, “We are thrilled to be working with Netflix and bringing these beloved books to life for the extraordinarily loyal and passionate fan base. The author Kiera Cass has created a spellbinding fantasy whose message of empowerment and authenticity is more relevant today than ever”
