'The Righteous Gemstones' is an HBO comedy that received a pilot order on June 28, 2018. The pilot episode was set to be written and directed by Danny McBride who will also be starring in the show as Jesse Gemstone. He is also one of the executive producers of the show.
Release Date:
'The Righteous Gemstones' will premiere August 18 on HBO.
Plot:
According to HBO, "This comedy series tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work." The show will portray how a family that is at the height of its popularity among audiences who believe their religious leanings, are not as faithful as they are portrayed on television.
But again, is there anything that television portrays that is not fictitious anymore? That's where the comedy factor of this series comes through and the question they put forth is how righteous is this family really?
Cast:
John Goodman as Eli Gemstone
John Goodman plays the role of the head of the televangelist family, Eli Gemstone, and he is the one who laid out the path for his son and grandson to walk when it comes to talking about faith and the power of belief in the Lord Jesus Christ for television. One of the things to watch out for in this show would be the camaraderie between Goodman, Danny McBride and Adam DeVine. Goodman played Daniel "Big Dan" Teague in the Coen brothers' 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?', a one-eyed man who masquerades as a Bible salesman and mugs two of the main characters, Everett and Delmar.
Danny McBride as Jesse Gemstone
Danny McBride, the eldest of Eli's children doesn't get along with his siblings. The sibling rivalry comes across pretty clearly in trailers and teasers that have been released so far and with Edi Patterson in the mix, there is some good fun the show promises. 'The Righteous Gemstones' was created by Danny McBride and after the success of his previous shows such as 'Eastbound and Down' and 'Vice Principals', this show is something to look forward to.
Edi Patterson as Judy Gemstone
Edi Patterson plays the role of Judy Gemstone, who is Eli's only daughter, but she is kept away from the limelight, unlike the sons who are always stealing it from each other. It is her personal grouch that their father doesn't involve her in what has for them become a family business. She seems to get a kick out of bullying the youngest in the family -- Kelvin Gemstone -- and this relationship might just turn out to be a goldmine for sibling rivalry memes in the days to come.
Adam DeVine as Kelvin Gemstone
Adam DeVine plays the youngest of the siblings in the show, Kelvin Gemstone. He has different equations with his brother and sister. With the former, he has a witty remark or two to counteract any form of insults that his brother throws his way and with the latter, he is usually on the receiving end of punches and kicks.
Creator:
The show is created by Danny McBride, who also serves as one of the executive producers. He has worked on this show with Jody Hill and David Gordon Green, who he previously worked with on shows 'Eastbound and Down' and 'Vice Principals'.
Trailers:
The first teaser for the show released May 2 and introduced us to the characters, especially the Gemstone family and how their business works.
The second teaser, which came out July 3 went a little deeper and showed us that this family that talks about faith and religion so sincerely for television is just made up of a bunch of greedy men who are regressive and are blind to the fact that they are.
The trailer of the show dropped July 25 and featured the Gemstone family in all its glory. There is money, power and greed that comes along with it an, in addition, we will also see the family being blackmailed by an unknown group.
This only adds to the chaotic equations of the Gemstone family. It also looks like Eli may have a bigger role to play in the blackmailing, but we will have to wait and see how things turn out.
