Episode 6 of 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' saw Sophie informing Midge that L Roy Dunham of the New York Daily News has written an article on Midge, criticizing her and her work. However, this isn't the first hit piece about Midge. The name "L Roy Dunham" is mentioned for the first time during the Season 4 premiere when someone shows Midge a copy of the Daily News in which Dunham uses colorful language to describe Midge and her comedy. Dunham even mentions Midge being fired from Shy Baldwin's tour, and continues to take digs at her even in stories that aren't about her.

While Susie tries to avoid Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch)  and book Alfie (Gideon Glick) a gig at Joel's club, Midge heads over to the New York Daily News' office to confront Dunham. To Midge's surprise, Dunham happens to be a woman, and the two have a conversation on why she writes "those terrible articles." Midge asks Dunham to stop writing about her and when Dunham refuses to do so, Midge asks her the reason for writing those hit pieces. Midge assumes that Dunham doesn't like the free flow of filth in her sets, but is corrected by Dunham, who tells her that she just doesn't find her funny.

Dunham goes on to tell her that Midge makes "great copy," and that "it kind of writes itself" when it comes to female comics like Midge. She even justifies calling Midge a "slut" in the articles, telling her that it was just an implication and that it was cleared with legal before publishing. Dunham adds that her stories on Midge have helped her grow at the Daily News and that she's keeping Midge's name in the press. Dunham ends the conversation suggesting Midge should thank her, and that she's a "gin girl."

A furious Midge tells Dunham to carry on with her hit pieces and her attempts to destroy her but Dunham once again corrects her, calling her a "gold mine," revealing that she has no interest in ruining Midge's career.

'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
