Creators
'The Haunting of Bly Manor' is based on the 1898 novella, 'The Turn of the Screw', by Henry James. The Netflix adaptation is created and directed by Mike Flanagan and is executive produced by Trevor Macy.
In an interview, Flanagan said, "We're looking at all the ghost stories of Henry James as the jumping-off point for the season, so it very much is a whole new deal. It's a cool way to expand on some of the things I loved about season 1, but within the framework of a new story, without having to be restrained by the decisions we made last time. For Henry James fans, it's going to be pretty wild, and for people who aren’t familiar with his work, it's going to be unbelievably scary. I already think it's much scarier than season 1, so I'm very excited about it."
In another interview, he spoke about the themes that 'The Haunting of Bly Manor' explore. "It certainly provides a new way to tell a love story, and there are three of them that really beat at the heart of this season," Flanagan said. "They all have a very dark edge to them. And by the end, it's really hard to differentiate tragedy with romance. That sense of romantic longing for someone who meant so much to us - but who's gone - really is the heart of any ghost story."
