LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In heartbreaking news, it was discovered that actor Matthew Perry suddenly passed away on October 28, leaving many loved ones and fans absolutely devastated.

The cause of death, while still under investigation, has been reported as drowning. Perry was found unresponsive in the jacuzzi tub of his Los Angeles apartment. While there have been confirmations of no foul play or drugs being involved, other causes have not been ruled out as a possibility.

There has been a special emphasis on the involvement of drugs in this case as Perry used to struggle with substance abuse, which seriously affected his physical and mental health.

Perry's addiction took such a major toll on him that it caused him to have a close call with death back in 2018.

Perry had problems with addiction to prescription painkillers which he had started taking after being injured while shooting 'Fools Rush In'. While the pills provided him comfort at first, they soon became an issue when he reached the point of swallowing over 50 pills each day.

Although he recovered from his addiction eventually, Perry's body reacted to the large doses of pills in 2018 when he ended up with a perforated bowel which paralyzed his digestive system.

Perry had to be admitted into a hospital and was later put into coma and had a very low chance of surviving, he revealed.

"The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live," he told People, "I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that's called a Hail Mary. No one survives that."

Matthew Perry struggled with alcoholism during 'Friends'

While the comedian-actor was making millions laugh with his sarcastic jokes on 'Friends', Perry's state behind the camera was much grimmer.

The actor had gotten into substance abuse much before his break into stardom. He was a child of divorced parents and was merely a teenager when he first got around to getting into alcohol and drugs.

However, he only started getting addicted to alcohol when he was 24 and cast as the iconic Chandler Bing. Throughout the 10 seasons of the sitcom, his addiction came and went, though there were times when Perry's state worsened.

He told People that regardless of his addiction, he was shown support from his castmates.

"Penguins, in nature, when one is sick, or when one is very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up. They walk around it until that penguin can walk on its own. That's kind of what the cast did for me," the actor had said.

Perry also revealed to ABC News that the cast and crew held an intervention at one point when they got seriously concerned about his condition. He also reportedly had to go to rehab 15 times because of his addiction.
