Did 'The Simpsons' predict Ted Cruz's Cancun vacation 30 years ago? Internet dubs show writer 'time traveler'

'The Simpsons’ has done it again. Some of the ardent fans of the long-running series went back in the show's history to point out that the animated series predicted that a politician would be flying to a warm resort, while leaving behind millions of people in his constituency to feel the wrath of a deadly crisis. The animated series is known for predicting a lot of political, cultural and social events. 'The Simpsons', in 2000, also predicted that Donald Trump would become the president of the United States. On the other hand, they also predicted the dress that the first female vice-president would wear at the inauguration.

And looks like, the showrunners have got it bang on this time around as well. As imagined, the same scenario was part of a 'The Simpsons' episode almost three decades before Senator Ted Cruz took a controversial trip to Cancun this week, even as people of Texas are fighting a severe snowstorm and power outage crisis for the past few days.

What happens in the video clip doing the rounds on social media?

The clip doing rounds on social media is from an episode titled ‘Marge in Chains’ and features the mayor of Springfield city Joe Quimby addressing the citizens of Springfield to inform the citizens about a pandemic that brought the entire town to its knees. However, the most bizarre thing about the clip is the mayor’s reaction to the epidemic. He doesn’t care about the people of the constituency and went on a vacation to the Bahamas, leaving behind the people to suffer the wrath of the epidemic.

He does a press conference from the Bahamas to address the outbreak and lamely attempts to fool residents into believing he’s still working at his office. In the video, the mayor can be heard saying: “People of Springfield. Because of the epidemic, I have canceled my vacation to the Bahamas.” However, the camera shows that he already in the Bahamas and enjoying his vacation while spending his time at the beach. He is then interrupted by a musician in a bathing suit.

Social media left stunned by the prediction

Social media users shared the clip across all the major platforms and hailed ‘The Simpsons’ for predicting the future once again. One of the users said that it’s amazing how the show continues to predict such stuff. He said: “I suppose when you’ve thrown enough snarks to fill more than 700 episodes, you’re bound to get some predictions by accident. But it’s amazing how often ‘The Simpsons’ call this stuff.”

Meanwhile, another user noted that one of the writers on the show must be a time traveler. She wrote: “I swear… one of the Simpsons writers must be a time traveler.” Another Twitter user admitted that ‘The Simpsons’ simply “nailed” the prediction on Ted Cruz. He wrote: I don’t really look too deep into those ‘The Simpsons predicted the future!’ type posts but I think they nailed the @tedcruz one.” However, there were many who believed that the prediction is not something that people should focus on at this time because leaders abandon people all the time. One of the users wrote: “No. This happens all the time.”

We must remind you that this is not the first time 'The Simpsons' have predicted such a thing. Previously, it was reported that they actually predicted the COVID-19 pandemic in one of its earlier seasons. On the other hand, they also predicted one of the ending sequences of 'Game of Throne' and voter fraud.

Ted Cruz and the controversy regarding his trip

Cruz, a Texas Republican, has come out and apologized to the people of the state for leaving them behind in the middle of a crisis. He admitted that going to Cancun, Mexico was a “mistake” and started to have second thoughts on his trip as soon as he boarded the plane.

While talking to the reporters, Cruz said: “I started having second thoughts almost the moment I sat down on the plane, because on the one hand, all of us who are parents have a responsibility to take care of our kids, take care of our family. Leaving when so many Texans were hurting didn't feel right and so I changed my return flight and flew back on the first available flight I could take. Of course, I understand why people are upset.”

Many Democrats, including the Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, demanded Cruz’s resignation. Hinojosa believes that Cruz is “proving to be an enemy” to the state.
“Ted Cruz jetting off to Mexico while Texans remain dying in the cold isn’t surprising, but it is deeply disturbing and disappointing,” Hinojosa said in a statement.

According to The Washington Post, almost 47 people have died because of the major winter storms that engulfed the states of Texas, Tennessee, and more.
