Taylor Swift slams 'Ginny and Georgia', says '2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back'
A new Netflix young-adult drama series has caused an outrage, angering not just Taylor Swift fans, but the pop star herself. 'Ginny & Georgia', which premiered on Netflix on February 24, 2021, had allegedly misogynistic dialogues. The show follows Ginny Miller (Antonia Gentry), a 15-year-old, and her 30-year-old mother Georgia (Brianne Howey) in a New England town.
‘Ginny & Georgia’, from first-time showrunner Debra J. Fisher and first-time creator Sarah Lampert, tells the tale of the angsty and awkward Ginny Miller, who often feels more mature than her mother, the irresistible and dynamic Georgia Miller. After years on the run, Georgia desperately wants to put down roots in picturesque New England and give her family something they've never had... a normal life. But it's not all carpool and Kombucha as Georgia's past threatens her and her family's new way of life... and Georgia will do anything to protect her family.

In one of the episodes, we see the mother-daughter duo in conversation. On two different occasions, the show took potshots at Swift: “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift,” and “Taylor Swift made an entire career off her exes”. Fans of Swift soon took over Twitter to slam ‘Ginny & Georgia’, accusing the show of slut-shaming.
“If those scriptwriters thought of these lines as jokes, are they really that dumb? Being misogynistic and slut-shaming people has never been a joke. Taylor has been slut-shamed throughout her entire career and she doesn't deserve it, no one else does! RESPECT TAYLOR SWIFT,” wrote one fan on Twitter. Thousands of others had similar comments.

Like fans, Swift has criticized the show’s writing as well. She called the dialogues from ‘Ginny & Georgia’ a “lazy, deeply sexist” joke made about her dating life. “Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard-working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY,” Swift wrote. “Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you [broken heart] Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”
