'Supergirl': James Gunn introduces Jason Momoa's antihero ahead of film's June release
DC head honcho James Gunn gave the franchise faithful the first look at Jason Momoa's antihero Lobo in 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.' Earlier on Friday, he took to Instagram to share a video of Lobo stepping out of his set trailer sporting fangs. The clip later shifts to the 'Aquaman' star's look in the upcoming film.
'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' stars 'House of the Dragon' star Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and is the second film of Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted franchise after 2025's 'Superman' starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Earlier, director Craig Gillespie shed light on what to expect from the film. "They are so different in tone,” Gillespie said, per IGN. "And to be able to really lean into it and embrace it… And… are we allowed to say this? The whole movie takes place in outer space." This was seconded by DC head honcho, James Gunn: "The outer space thing's a big part of it because it is a space fantasy."
"I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman," Gunn added. "A much more difficult background. He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents who loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin."
Momoa was chosen to play Lobo in 2024, and he spoke of his interest in playing the antihero. "I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,” he said in the interview. "I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there."
Previously, Gunn detailed Kara's journey. "In our story, we have Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and she lived there for the first 14 years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f***ed up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far."
'Supergirl' releases June 26, 2026, in theatres.
