BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: It seems William Shatner’s love for his ex-wife, Elizabeth Martin, of 18 years has no expiry date as the two were seen together recently, after a divorce that cost him $2M in 2020. The 91-year-old looked quite happy with Martin during the Living Legends of Aviation Awards in Beverly Hills on Friday, January 20.

The 'Star Trek' star and his 64-year-old ex-wife had reportedly separated in 2019 before the divorce three years ago. However, their joint presence at the  event, which was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, hinted that they had seemingly let bygones be bygones. The function reportedly marked their first red carpet appearance after reconciling.

During the ceremony, Shatner, who was honored with the Aviation Inspiration and Patriotism Award, told the The Mirror, “My wife… she is the zest of life. She brings the flavour.” When the veteran actor was asked which spice he would choose to describe his relationship, he replied, “Mustard” but his fourth wife changed it to “cinnamon.”

The actor also answered the question of being a living legend in a humorous way. He told the publication, “Well, I think getting out of bed every morning and breathing… I am, like, 'Wow'. I am a legend, I am breathing and I am still alive,” adding, “I have been spending weekends on tour doing a show called The Unexplained. I am doing an album with the London Symphonic.”

Shatner reportedly received the prize at the 20th Living Legends of Aviation Awards as he became the oldest person to fly into space on Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin in October 2021. As per Variety, describing the experience in his book, ‘Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder', he wrote, “It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness.”

The book continued, “Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna . . . things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral."

He further wrote, "I learned later that I was not alone in this feeling. It is called the ‘Overview Effect’ and is not uncommon among astronauts, including Yuri Gagarin, Michael Collins, Sally Ride, and many others. Essentially, when someone travels to space and views Earth from orbit, a sense of the planet’s fragility takes hold in an ineffable, instinctive manner.”

“It can change the way we look at the planet but also other things like countries, ethnicities, religions; it can prompt an instant reevaluation of our shared harmony and a shift in focus to all the wonderful things we have in common instead of what makes us different. It reinforced tenfold my own view on the power of our beautiful, mysterious collective human entanglement, and eventually, it returned a feeling of hope to my heart,” Shatner wrote.
