'Star Trek: Picard': Who is Seven Of Nine from 'Voyager', what role will she play in the new series?

'Star Trek: Picard' took off on January 23 with much fanfare. Soaked in bittersweet nostalgia, the series revolves around the revered and now retired Jean-Luc Picard, 18 years older than we last saw him. He is back in his beloved France, away from intergalactic action and nursing old wounds that haven't healed. However, he is pulled back into the thick of things after he runs into his old friend Data's (Brent Spiner) 'daughter' Dahj, who is later killed. And as these androids are made in clones, he is all set to find her 'sister' Sohj.

Peppered with references to 'Nemesis', 'The Next Generation' and 'Voyager', 'Star Trek: Picard' was a treat for fans. Yet, the Easter Eggs and secrets are from over. Seven Of Nine (Jeri Ryan) from 'Star Trek: Voyager' and Hugh from 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' will have crucial roles in the following episodes.

From what we know, Seven is making an effort to adapt to human life on Earth after the former Borg drone was freed from the collective. At the end of the first episode, we saw a hint of the Borg Cube, so this pretty much means that the Federation's biggest enemy will have a major role in the series. But before we get to the enemy we need to learn more about Seven Of Nine .



 

For the unversed, Seven Of Nine was born Annika Hansen on the Tendera Earth Colony. Her parents were Federation scientists who studied the Borg race. This consequently leads to their demise. During one of their studies, they followed one of the Borg cubes into the Delta Quadrant. Due to their scientific prowess, they remained undetected for two years. However, an ion storm caused some damage to their ship's purpose shields and the Borgs took over and assimilated Annika. For several years, Annika was part of the Borg collective under the designation Seven Of Nine.

During the third season finale of 'Star Trek: Voyager', the Borg were compelled to form an uneasy alliance with the Voyager crew, as the threat of Species 8472 was looming large. They struck a deal and Janeway offered the Collective new weapons, provided they were given safe passage. The Borg sent Seven Of Nine as their representative and were all set to break their end of the deal. Janeway knew this would happen, and so just as Seven tried to assimilate the crew, Lieutenant Torres overloaded the Borg implant in her body and destroyed her connection to the rest of the Collective. The Hologram changed her form back to human as much as possible. Yet, many Borg-like trademarks remained. In Season 4, Seven regains her memories of the assimilation she suffered as a child, after revisiting the crashed Hansen ship. Throughout the course of 'Voyager', Seven slowly becomes more human. 

Going by the trailers of 'Star Trek: Picard', Seven will most probably help Picard with his missions.
