How did Spencer Webb die?
Oregon Ducks tight end Spencer Webb died after he fell and suffered a head injury while visiting western Oregon's Triangle Lake. Webb had an 209 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 2019. He only played in the Pac-12 Championship Game against USC during the Covid-19 shortened season in 2020. He made a breakthrough in his career in the second quarter of the 2019 season opener against Auburn at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. "Webb was attempting to climb a “nearly vertical” cliff near Triangle Lake when he lost his grip and tragically fell to his death," as per Lane County Sheriff’s Office. At 3.09 pm on July 13, he was pronounced dead by West Lake Fire Department personnel. Attempts to revive Webb were unsuccessful.
“Spencer was climbing the side of a steep cliff when he lost his grip and fell,” Lane County Sheriff deputy William Strubel wrote in his incident report. “I observed the cliff Spencer had been climbing to be nearly vertical and I observed what appeared to be scuff marks caused by Spencer on the side of the cliff. Approximately 25-30 feet above the water I observed moss which had been recently pulled off. This is consistent with statements obtained.” The incident report also detailed that he went to the spot with Cody Avilla, and girlfriend. The incident report reads, “Cody said they had been talking about going cliff diving all week and Spencer finally had a few hours between practices. Cody said he, Kelly and Spencer arrived at the slides. Cody said he and Spencer checked the depth and began climbing. Cody said they got to the first spot about 20-30 feet up. Cody suggested they jump from there but Spencer said, ‘We came all this way, we are going to do it right. Cody advised he preferred the notification come from Cristobal, as the family had maintained (contact with) the coach,” reports Oregon Live.
