'Spaceman' Review: Adam Sandler's intense performance in Netflix drama fades amid weak narrative
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: Science fiction is a challenging terrain to navigate. It demands a delicate balance between scientific understanding and boundless imagination, coupled with a sturdy screenplay to truly captivate audiences.
Any slip-ups on these fronts risk the film fading into obscurity, akin to a failed space mission lost amidst the stars.
Netflix's latest sci-fi offering, 'Spaceman', exemplifies this delicate dance. The plot follows Jakub Prochazka (Adam Sandler), a Czech astronaut, who embarks on a solo mission to the edge of the solar system.
His objective is to explore particles of a mysterious purple specter known as the Chopra cloud, looming in the sky for the past four years.
Netflix's 'Spaceman' falls short of expectations
Isolated for six months and millions of kilometers away from Earth, Jakub's only source of sanity is his wife, Lenka Prochazka (Carey Mulligan). However, troubles begin when Lenka decides to end her marriage. Subsequently, Jakub's inability to communicate with her starts taking a toll on his psyche.
Amid the solitude, he encounters a spider-like creature claiming to be an explorer. He aims no harm and offers him aid amidst the vastness of space. Their peculiar encounter takes him on a journey of self-introspection while unraveling the cosmos' mysteries.
The plot seems intriguing but the execution falls short of our expectations. 'Spaceman' struggles to fit between a tale of human connection, an exploration of solitude, and a survival saga.
The film's transitions between space and Earth; dreams and reality are seamless, yet at times ponderous.
The Johan Renck-directed project also falls short of comic aspirations. Heavy-handed satire on commercialism and cliched humor lack the sharp wit needed to resonate with the story.
Adam Sandler delivers a great performance in 'Spaceman'
Adam Sandler, who is primarily known for comic roles, surprises us with an intense performance this time. His portrayal of Jakub offers depth, gradually revealing humanity's cracks beneath emotional numbness.
The bond between Jakub and Hanus, whether real or imagined, resonates authentically, grounding 'Spaceman' emotionally. However, the predictability between them fails to sustain interest.
The central love story between Jakub and Lenka also fails to evoke empathy.
'The Big Bang Theory' fame Kunal Nayyar also features in 'Spaceman'. However, his portrayal of Peter, who is supposed to look after Jakub's well-being, doesn't contribute much to the narrative.
Visually, 'Spaceman', in its final moments, offers beautiful sequences, depicting the vastness of space. However, these aesthetic moments are overshadowed by the film's weak narrative as it concludes as a story about a sad, selfish man in space who undergoes transformation in moments of isolation.
'Spaceman' is now streaming on Netflix
