Finally, the announcement ‘Saturday Night Live’ fans were waiting for has arrived. The show released its December schedule with details of hosts and musical guests. ‘SNL’ will be returning after almost a month. The last show on November 7 was a post-poll episode hosted by comedian Dave Chappelle.

Interestingly, the comedian also hosted the 2016 post-election episode. By the time the show was aired, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were announced the president-elect and the vice-president-elect respectively and both of them had already given their first public speech. So, the cold open focused on the election result. They did not forget Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump either. Baldwin’s Trump said, “Of course they’re trying to steal the election! Stop the count! Stop the count…oh we’re behind! Count all the votes!…look at all that red.” The red he was referring to, which Chloe Fineman’s Kayleigh McEnany brought out to support that claim, was actually the map of “Covid-19 cases”. Then Baldwin’s Trump sat down at a piano and sang a subdued version of ‘Macho Man’, before saying, “This isn’t goodbye, America. I’m just going to say, ‘See you in court’.”

But one of the most-talked-about aspects in the last episode was how quickly they got an almost identical costume for Maya Rudolph’s Harris. The white suit that the real Harris wore during her first speech as VP-elect and the one that Rudolph wore, were quite similar.

Chappelle’s monologue also entertained the audience. His monologue started with him talking about his great-grandfather — a man he never met but heard about all his life. The comedian said his great-grandfather was a man who was a slave for 10 years of his life before learning to read and then dedicating his life to education, the freedom of Black people and Jesus Christ. He spoke about recent months during the pandemic and performing stand-up comedy in the cornfields in the small town in which he lives.

What's special this time?

The upcoming episode will be hosted by Jason Bateman. This will be his second time hosting the show. He had hosted it in 2005. Surprisingly, the musical guest for the week is Morgan Wallen. For the uninitiated, the October 10 episode, which was hosted by comedian Bill Burr, Wallen was supposed to be the musical guest. However, the country singer was dropped last moment after, as reported by Deadline, video of him partying without a mask surfaced online. He did apologize later and said, “My actions this past weekend were shortsighted, and they have obviously affected my long-term goals and my dreams. I respect the show’s decision because I know that I put them in jeopardy, and I take ownership for this. I’d like to apologize to SNL, to my fans, to my team for bringing me these opportunities, and I let them down.” He was replaced by Jack White.

What to expect?

The show is known for its hilarious political parodies and a lot has happened politically since the last time the show aired. While it is still not clear if Baldwin will be appearing as Trump in the upcoming episode or not, but for Carrey’s Joe Biden, it seems to be just the beginning for regular appearances. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see Bateman, who has proved his mettle as a versatile actor in the past few years, as a host for the second time and how he engages the audience with his monologue and the sketches he appears in.

When will it air?

The new episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ Season 46 will air on Saturday, December 5, at 11.30 pm ET on NBC.
