'Single Black Female' Review: Lifetime's brings a perfect combo of drama and mystery
Channels like Lifetime try their best to bring different and interesting stories for their viewers. So apart from the slate of romantic Christmas movies, the channel has been bringing out new movies for their 'Deadly Resolution' segment and 'Single Black Female' is another one on the list of deadly resolutions.
'Single Black Female' revolves around Monica (Raven Goodwin), who is reeling from the death of her beloved father. Life becomes worse for her when she learns her boyfriend has been unfaithful to her. Monica was very much supported and loved by her mother Denise (Janet Hubert) and an excellent friend Clarke Michelle (Kron Moore). While moving on from the loss of her father, she gets a new hosting job for an afternoon talk show. After receiving the opportunity, Monica meets Simone (Amber Riley) and hires her as her secretary. Monica is charmed by Simone's cheerful nature and professional demeanor and considers her hire a good decision, but little does she know that Simone is not what she seems and strangers, almost always are- a danger. If you like what you've read of the plot so far, then you could also give these Lifetime movies a watch: 'The Wrong High School Sweetheart' or 'The Wrong Blind Date'.

Simone and Monica soon become best friends in the movie and the twist, later on, is that Simone was planning to stab Monica from behind all the while maintaining a friendly face. The movie is full of suspense as one is curious as to why Simone would want to do something like this to a stranger. When we do come to know the reason, it really serves as the best 'a-ha' moment of the movie.
Amber Riley as Simone channels her insecurities to come out as the vindictive, evil friend to the unsuspecting Monica, played by Raven Goodwin. Also, it is impressive that the two actresses performed their own stunts for the physical requirements of their roles. Working on a creative script by Tessa Evelyn Scott and Sa'Rah L Jones, the two 'industry twins' played their roles perfectly. Shari Carpenter's 'Single Black Female' on Lifetime is a perfect watch for those who love to binge on movies full of suspense and drama.
The movie is Lifetime's take on the cult classic 'Single White Female' starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh which told the story of Allison (Fonda), a trusting woman who opens her home to a roommate (Leigh), only to learn that her new tenant is a psycho. In an interview, Goodwin paying homage to the original film had said, "The first Single White Female was pretty wild. It was really out of control. I feel [this one] has just about the same shock value, but it's [set] during this time and, you know, with Black girls."
So does the movie live up to the shock value? In my opinion, it truly does bring back the memories of 'Single White Female' in spades.
