Carly Simon, 77, loses both sisters Lucy, 82, and Joanna, 85, one day apart to cancer
It is never easy to lose a family member- but in singer Carly Simon’s case, the grief is tenfold. The 77-year-old ‘Anticipation’ crooner had lost her sister Joanna Simon, 85, on Wednesday to thyroid cancer. While that in itself is enough to break the family dynamic, Simon’s grief did not end there. The next day, her other sister Lucy Simon, 82, also died after long time-fighting breast cancer, according to a report by Entertainment Tonight.
Of the two deceased sisters, Lucy had joined hands with Carly to form the Simon sisters- a folk-singing duo who are credited with various hit tracks- ‘Wynken, Blynken & Nod’ being the most well-known, having debuted in the Billboard top 100 in the early 60s. All three sisters are daughters of the co-founder of publishing behemoth Simon and Schuster, Richard Simon.

Lucy Simon later went on to create more music in her solo career after Carly’s career took off. Her two albums, 'Lucy Simon' and 'Stolen Time', were released in 1975 and 1977 respectively. But it was her path as a children’s music creator that led her to grand success. She went on to produce 'Harmony' in 1982 and 'Harmony 2' in 1983- along with her husband David Levine. They both won Grammy awards for their work in both albums.
However, Lucy Simon is best known for her path-breaking career as a Broadway composer- her work for The Secret Garden won her a Tony Award nomination in 1991 and her work also featured in some HBO productions as well.
The oldest sister Joanna Simon had a successful career as an Opera performer- she had performed all over the world with some internationally revered orchestras, most notably the Vienna Philharmonics. Following her retirement, she went on to pursue a successful career in journalism- she produced an Emmy award-winning report for PBS. She also had a career as a real estate broker, with her first sale being the sale of famous newsman Walter Cronkite’s apartment. She later went on to get together with Cronkite, following the death of both their spouses.
The Simon sisters also had a brother Peter, who died in 2018 after battling cancer. He was 71. According to multiple reports, Lucy passed away in her Piedmont home while Joanna passed away in Manhattan. Carly is now the only surviving member of the Simon family.
