LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jerrod Carmichael, this year's Golden Globes host, elicited gasps when he acknowledged Whitney Houston's death during the program, which startled the estate as well. After returning from a commercial break, Carmichael claimed that he had been asked to offer a "shoutout" to the venue hosting the event, which he did with this startling namedrop: "So, we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton."

In addition to the internet's reaction to the joke, Whitney's longtime manager and sister-in-law, Pat Houston, tells TMZ via a spokesperson, "The Whitney Houston Estate is disappointed in the joke, and felt it was in poor taste." Pat is the sole executor of Whitney's estate, therefore she has complete power over anything Whitney-related.

Houston, who was 48 at the time, perished inadvertently in a hotel bathtub. It was later discovered that the singer's death was caused in part by heart disease and cocaine use. Surely, he was referring to Whitney's 2012 overdose in one of the hotel rooms. Some people chuckled, but many more seemed surprised, and some even sighed. It was only one of Jerrod's contentious moments; another occurred when he addressed Shelly Miscavige... a high-ranking Scientologist who has been out of the public eye for years.

Viewers went to social media shortly after the joke was made to respond to Jerrod's statement, and many were not pleased. One commented, "Way out of his league, and a C- comedian at best, and I am being generous! Disrespectful, not funny or charming. Jerrod Carmichael was overpaid by $480K. Terrible choice in a Host, bring back Ricky Gervais." Another posted, "A lot of his monologues seemed more like dark truths rather than jokes. They were celebrating in the hotel that “killed” Whitney Houston. For viewers, that should tell you more about the Hollywood Foreign Press who puts the Golden Globes on. He didn’t seem to care about laughs." A third chimed in, "I wish ppl stop joking about Whitney….like damnnnn." A fourth tweeted, "Jerrod Carmichael Should Be Ashamed Of Himself. That Joke Was Very Offensive And Totally Unacceptable.!!! #GoldenGlobes." "Dude couldn't agree more. TBH hardly anything he said the whole night was "funny" hey maybe it's me, and I just don't get his humor (like it's supposed 2B some new age extra-dry comedy or something?), but yeah that Whitney "joke" was downright disgusting," said a fifth. Another posted, "His whole career is basically dark comedy and making something real uncomfortable.. if y’all don’t know jerrod then go watch his tv show Or special. The golden globes knew exactly who they were getting."
