‘Sing 2’: Release date, plot, cast, creators and all about animated musical-comedy starring Bono, Halsey and Pharrell Williams
Animated musical comedy-drama ‘Sing’ was released in 2016 and went on to gross a whopping $634 million at the global box-office. The lovable animated characters of Buster Moon the koala, Rosita the pig and Ash the crested porcupine punk among several others got etched in our hearts. Come 2021, we will see Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson once again taking over as the voice of the adorable characters on the silver screen.
The big news is the makers have now also roped in musicians Bono, Halsey and Pharrell Williams for the sequel. Speaking to Variety, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri asserted, “'Sing 2’ transcends the animation genre, immersing audiences in a fully realized world populated by complex characters, each with bold aspirations and relatable challenges. We are thrilled that the Sing franchise attracts such exceptional talent, and we are delighted to announce this extraordinary cast.” He added, “The film is a musical celebration of the unrelenting pursuit of one’s dreams, no matter how large the challenges that stand in your way. ‘Sing 2’ is scheduled to hit the theaters on December 22, 2021.
Plot
While the 2016 ‘Sing’ followed a group of animals in a singing competition, in part two, we will see Buster Moon, voiced by Matthew McConaughey and his friends persuade a reclusive rock star Clay Calloway to join them for the opening of a new show, as reported by IMDb.
Cast
The main characters from part one will return to spread the magic with their voices. However, the new additions to the cast have surely upped the excitement. U2’s frontman Bono, who will be making his animation film debut, will portray the role of a lion named Clay Calloway who becomes the world’s most reclusive rock legend after the death of his wife, reports Variety.
Pharrell Williams will take over the role of Alfonso, an elephant ice cream truck owner who becomes a love interest of the shy elephant Meena, voiced by Tori Kelly. Halsey will play the role of a teen daughter of music mogul wolf Jimmy Crystal, voiced by actor Bobby Cannavale. Her role has been given the name Porsche. Actor Eric Andre has also joined the cast where we will see him portraying the role of a self-important yak who is cast in the stage production opposite Meena in a romantic duet, as reported by the same website.
Scarlett Johansson
The Hollywood A-lister has been the world’s highest-paid actress in 2018 and 2019, and is a recipient of numerous awards including a coveted Tony Award and a BAFTA Award, along with nominations for two Academy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards.
Matthew McConaughey
The 51-years-old producer and actor is an Academy Award winner and is best known for his work in movies like 'Interstellar', ‘The Wedding Planner’, ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’, ‘Failure to Launch’, ‘Fool's Gold’ and others.
Reese Witherspoon
The actress is an Academy Award winner along with a host of other accolades. Pharrell Williams
The multiple award-winning musician is a winner of 13 Grammy Awards, including three for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical (one as a member of The Neptunes). Pharrell Williams is also a two-time Academy Award nominee i.e. for Best Original Song, for the track ‘Happy’ from ‘Despicable Me 2’ in 2014 and in 2017 for Best Picture, as a producer of ‘Hidden Figures.’
Bono

The 37-years-old comedian, actor, television host, writer and producer is best known as the creator, host, and co-writer of the Adult Swim comedy series The Eric Andre Show. Eric Andre has also played Mike on the FXX series ‘Man Seeking Woman’ and also voiced Azizi in the live-action remake of ‘The Lion King’.
Letitia Wright
The 27-years-old Guyanese- British actress is best known for her roles in ‘Black Panther’ and several British TV series, including ‘Top Boy’, ‘Coming Up’, ‘Chasing Shadows’, ‘Humans’, and others.
Creators
According to IMDb, Garth Jennings will be taking over the chair of the director and is also taking care of the script. He also wrote and directed the first part in 2016. Christopher Lourdelet has been roped in as the co-director for the project. Just like the first part, ‘Sing 2’ will also be made under the banner of Illumination films. Illumination is the studio behind movies like ‘Despicable Me’, ‘Minions’ and ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ franchises.
