Former Knicks player Iman Shumpert was arrested over the weekend after officers at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport allegedly found a “sizable” amount of marijuana in his backpack. According to TMZ, the 32-year-old was asked to stop at the checkpoint on Saturday, July 31, 2022. They found 6.12 ounces of a "green leafy substance" in his backpack, which Shumpert confirmed was marijuana. The substance was additionally verified through official tests.

Shumpert was then put in handcuffs and taken to the airport jail. If proven guilty, he could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted on “state jail felony” charges. The police report also claims Shumpert was in possession of a Glock magazine and 14 and 9mm rounds but not a gun. Shumpert was to fly to Los Angeles at 3 PM to visit his daughter. Though the police told him he would be arrested, he requested them to help him to fly to LA. Marijuana is legal in California while it remains illegal in Texas.

The 2016 NBA Champion’s career lasted for almost a decade. His last stint was with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2020-21 season. He has also played for the Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, and Houston Rockets. Shumpert was also the winner of Season 30 of 'Dancing With The Stars'. While with the Knicks, with whom he played from 2010-2015, Shumpert averaged 7.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

Shumpert's arrest led to renewed demands for marijuana to be legalized in Texas. A tweet read, "People are still getting arrested for marijuana? Texas is hell." Another commented, "Texan here..People saying “nothing to do with Texas” it’s federal yea yea it has everything to do with Texas. You know how many old people I see arrested in the valley for weed and not at the airport..it’s sad." One tweet claimed, "That’s personal use level for a heavy smoker. Just typical overpolicing the drug war." Another chimed in, "Shouldnt be arrested. Let him be. But dude taking weed to LA? like taking water to the ocean." "That's why it weed should be legal in every state and on the federal level .release the weed," another demanded.
