Spoilers for 'Secret Invasion' Episode 2

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The second episode of Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’ begins with a flashback to a time when a young Nick Fury promised a new home to a group of Skrulls if they help him win a battle. Talos supported Fury and voiced his opinion before a crowd of Skrulls. The crowd also contained a familiar figure: a young Gravik who had just arrived on Earth after his father had been killed by the Krees. Back then, Gravik hung on to Fury’s every word, believing in him but as time went on, Fury failed to deliver on the promise, and now, in the present, the older Gravik is furious.

The episode is titled ‘Promises’, which adequately captures the emotions of all the characters present in it. Fury is reminded of some promises while Gravik and the other Skrulls recall Fury's unkept promise. Despite Gravik's anger, there was still a section of Skrulls who were truly allies to the humans and did not want to start a war on the planet that had welcomed them. However, Gravik is there to remind these Skrulls that Earth is not their home. They will eventually have to turn it into home, but for that, they need to wipe out the humans. Therefore, he asks for help from Skrulls around the planet. Due to his ambitions, he was appointed as the Skrull General by The Council.

What is ‘The Council’?

During the episode, Talos reveals to Fury that there are millions of Skrulls present on Earth, many more than the ones Gravik safeguards in his closed community. After bombing a square in Russia, which leads to over 2,000 deaths, Gravik arrives at the meeting of a secret council. The members of this council appear to be powerful humans, occupying roles as UK’s Prime Minister, and NATO’s Secretary General, but they are Skrulls underneath. The Council reprimands Gravik for his attack but when he reminds them of Fury's betrayal, the council members give in to his desires and appoint him as the new Skrull General.

The members believe that diplomacy with humans only works in times of peace but when at war, a general needs to be the face of the Skrulls to fight for them. Gravik makes use of his position to influence The Council and all the Skrulls now seem to be leaning towards Gravik to take on the humans.

Will G’iah also join Gravik?

Talos’s daughter, G’iah may have started her journey by allying with Gravik’s cause of giving Skrulls a home but in the second episode, she seems to be snooping around, appearing more sympathetic to her father’s cause, which until now is siding with the humans. G’iah follows Pagon to a secret lab where two scientists are working with mysterious DNA samples to make some sort of machine.

She overhears the conversation and learns that Gravik and Pagon are looking for something called the harvest, which the scientists need to complete their work. Gravik needs an army to defeat the humans and will go to any extent to generate more firepower to achieve his cause. Whether G’iah will go with Gravik is still unclear as Talos decides to have a secret meeting with his daughter.
