'Same-sex pig couple?': Peppa Pig slammed for 'disgusting' introduction of character with lesbian parents

Peppa Pig, one of the most popular TV shows for children which has been running since May 2004, has a same-sex couple featuring for the first-ever time. It comes after a 2019 petition, started by Beth G and Lacey K, that demanded a same-sex parent family. Many welcomed the characters while some slammed the move, with one saying, “That’s the end of the Peppa Pig phenomenon. What a shame.”

According to The Sun, the episode, titled 'Families' that aired on Channel 5 on September 5, shows Penny Polar Bear drawing two female polar bears in dresses alongside her three friends before she explained her sketch. She says, "I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti."

Following the telecast of the episode, people took to Twitter to express their views. One questioned, "Same-sex pig couple? Who's porking who? Sounds like they're hamming it up..." Another user said it's the end of the show. The person wrote, "That’s the end of the Peppa Pig phenomenon. What a shame. Education not indoctrination." One individual commented by saying, "Absolutely disgusted in what you have decided to introduce on Peppa. I'm having to explain to my 4 year old daughter why one of them has 2 mums. I'm totally disgusted and she will NOT be watching it ever again. You should be bloody ashamed of yourselves."

On the other hand, many applauded the episode. One tweeted by saying, "Peppa Pig having two mummy polar bears has just warmed my heart.” One more user wrote, "Wow so many people triggered by this. So what? The reality of life is there are a lot of same sex couples rasing healthy and happy children. Imagine indoctrinating your own chld into hating gay couples because you won't let them watch peppa pig."

The petition for same-sex parents

The petition with over 17,000 supporters out of the 25,000 goal in 2019, which now stands at more than 23,000 supporters, said, “Despite there being six series and over 250 episodes produced so far, none of the families feature same-sex parents. Children watching Peppa Pig are at an impressionable age, and excluding same-sex families will teach them that only families with either a single parent or two parents of different sexes are normal." It further said, "This means that children of same-sex parents may feel alienated by Peppa Pig, and that other children may be more likely to bully them, simply through ignorance. Peppa Pig is not just for entertainment, children are inevitably learning from it."
