Shawn Hatosy drops disappointing update on ‘The Pitt’ night shift spin-off: ‘I’ve heard…’
'The Pitt' has built a loyal fanbase over the course of its last two seasons. Fans across the globe often take to social media to speculate about storylines and discuss how they would like situations to unfold. One of their major demands in recent times has been a spin-off centered on the night-shift staff at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC). Some of the night-shift characters that have captured the hearts of fans include Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy), Dr. John Shen (Ken Kirby), and Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris). These characters typically appear during the handover, and the one who stands out is undoubtedly Dr. Jack Abbot.
Dr. Jack Abbot works as a senior attending physician on the facility's night shift. During his off-duty hours, he works as a TEMS provider for the Pittsburgh SWAT team. His brief appearance in Season 1 made such a deep impact that his role was expanded in the next season. After several massive upheavals, Jack had an emotional pep talk with Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) at the end of Season 2. Speaking to the Bingeworthy Podcast about his character's speech, he said, “He’s (Jack) so used to being able to look at this: this is a resuscitative hysterotomy (referring to the case on hand). We’ve got to get this baby out. We have to stabilize the mom. That’s very clear to him.” He added, “But when it comes to Robby, he can’t really do anything but offer his own struggle. As a friend, sometimes when you hear it from the other side, somebody that’s wearing the same hat and stepping in your shoes, that’s all you need. You need a little push in the right direction.”
Seeing how pivotal Jack became to the show's premise, many believed that a spin-off was only a matter of time. However, Hatosy shut down the possibility while on the podcast. “I’ve heard kind of explicitly from HBO Max and even Noah in the press that that’s not something that they want to do,” he explained. “As much as I’d be into it, it doesn’t sound like it’s a real possibility.” Hatosy is probably referring to Noah Wyle's interview with Deadline, in which he stated that “anything is possible, but it’s not probable,” while speaking about the spin-off.

The Season 3 teaser confirmed that there will be some form of a crossover between the two shifts. “We’re getting to experience a little bit more of that shift, if that makes sense,” Hatosy teased. “If that means the end of each season we get a little bit more, and the beginning of each season we get a little bit more, that’s kind of cool.” All episodes of 'The Pitt' are currently streaming on HBO Max, with Season 3 set to premiere in January 2027.
