'Robin Hood' trailer: Jamie Foxx and Taron Egerton play dashing bandits of Sherwood Forest in upcoming film

Taron Egerton, who plays the role of Robin Hood, has given the character a more youthful look as compared to what Russel Crowe had depicted in Ridley Scott's 2010 adaptation

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Summit Entertainment's 'Robin Hood' which sees Taron Egerton (known for his work in 'Kingsman') play the role of the legendary bandit of Sherwood Forest being trained by Little John, played by Jamie Foxx. The movie, coming from the director of 'Peaky Blinders' and 'Black Mirror' Otto Bathurst, gives the legendary outlaw a more modern look in jackets and suits that looks like they're straight out of 21st century.

The film's tone recalls the works of Guy Ritchie with its shady atmosphere as was seen in Ritchie's 2000 movie 'Snatch'. This devious portrayal of the characters is set against an eerie medieval Nottingham. Although the film seems to take liberties with costumes, it may still turn out to be better than Ridley Scott's 2010 movie 'Robin Hood'.

The trailer opens with Little John training Robin Hood as he tells him, "You were a lord, but now you get to become a thief, and I’m going to show you how." Robin, as Egerton gives him a more sprightly aspect, is intrigued to know when he will finally be able to steal. He asks, "When do I actually get to, you know, steal?”.

As the trailer suggests, the plot of the movie will follow Robin Hood, a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander Little John, mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance. In spite of the imprecise costumes, the characters still seem to be in sync with the period as there are plenty of glimpses of sword-play, churches, monarchs, and most of all, archery.

Apart from Egerton and Foxx, there are several other well-known faces who will be seen depicting the medieval characters. The 'Fifty Shades of Grey' star Jamie Dornan will play one of the prominent members of the Merry Men, Will Scarlet.

Tim Minchin will be playing the role of the jovial Friar Tuck who is known for his fondness for ale and is probably the only character who doesn't speak ill about anyone. Maid Marian, the shepherdess who is also the love interest of Robin Hood, will be played by Eve Hewson.

While the cast seems promising enough to do justice to the historical characters, it will be able to overshadow the clothing which not at all depicts the early hand-sewn clothing of the medieval times.

However, Lionsgate certainly knows how to advertise its products right. The film has reportedly partnered with the investing app Robinhood for a scavenger hunt titled "Crypto Power To The People" which will be held at SDCC this week. Participants will search for coins that are redeemable for a range between $50-$5,000 which can be invested in cryptocurrencies over a three-day period.

Collider quotes a statement where Lionsgate Executive Vice President of Worldwide Digital Marketing Danielle DePalma and Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships and Promotions Paula Kupfer have compared the hunt to the adventures of the legendary outlaw: "We’re thrilled to partner with Robinhood to utilize state-of-the-art technology as a unique way to engage Robin Hood fans. In the spirit of the legendary hero, this collaboration gives back to the community through initiatives that parallel the high-octane adventures in our Robin Hood movie.”

'Robin Hood' is set to hit the theatres on November 21, just the day before Thanksgiving. The film is being produced by  Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Basil Iwanyk, under the production companies Appian Way Productions and Safehouse Pictures.
