LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Lisa Marie Presley had a close relationship with her mother, Priscilla Presley, before her death on January 12, but the duo also experienced their fair share of ups and downs. Years before Lisa Marie's untimely death, Priscilla reportedly tried to get her into the controversial Church of Scientology's drug rehabilitation program.

Back in 2019, longtime Scientologist Priscilla asked church executives to let her daughter enroll in Narconon, the organization's drug rehabilitation program, according to Radar Online. "Lisa Marie was taking drugs again, and no one could get through to her," claimed an insider. "Priscilla saw how bad things were and did what she always does to save her daughter -- turned to Scientology to get her back into line."

Priscilla has been a part of the church for a very long time and also raised her daughter there. However, Lisa Marie reportedly quit Scientology as an adult in 2013. "Uncovering the fact that I was surrounded by people who were not well-intended, for one," said Lisa Marie, about her choice to leave, as per Lainey Gossip. "Confidants [who were] very, very intimately and closely involved with me and my life. And had been for years. Basically, it was a big sinister situation, where there was like, kind of intel and covert ops going on, and a whole effort to control me that I didn’t know about. It was just too much for me."

Lisa Marie disclosed her drug abuse issues as part of her divorce proceedings from her ex-husband, Michael Lockwood. According to the singer, her "serious substance abuse problem started around 2012." In court, it was revealed that Lisa Marie "was using a significant amount of drugs and staying in bed a lot" from October 2015 to June 2016. She revealed she was abusing prescription pills and eventually "started using cocaine to counteract the effects of the pills." Although it's unclear if Lisa Marie participated in the Narconon program, some claim that the church had previously treated her.

Lisa Marie died on January 12 after being hospitalized following a cardiac arrest, her mother said in a statement. "It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us. She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment," Priscilla stated.
