'Pledge my undying love': Robert Downey Jr celebrates couplehood with wife Susan on Valentine's Day
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Robert Downey Jr penned a sentimental and beautiful message for his wife Susan on social media for Valentine's Day. The 'Iron Man' actor, 57, and his producer wife of 17 years were seen laughing in a set of photo booth-style pictures that Downey Jr posted to his Instagram on Tuesday, February 14.
The two-time Oscar nominee had a clean-shaven appearance and was dressed simply in a black zip jacket, black slacks, and white sneakers. His short, brown hair had just a hint of grey at the temples. Meanwhile, Susan, 49, wore a black crew-neck sweater and a skirt with black and white polka dots for a well-coordinated outfit. In a loving tribute to his wife, Downey Jr wrote, "To she who lovingly tolerates my many shenanigans, I pledge my undying love."

Robert Downey Jr and Susan Downey's relationship timeline
The pair met in 2003, while the 'Dolittle' actor was starring in the 2003 psychological thriller 'Gothika' alongside Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz, which Susan was producing. "We were up in Montreal prepping for Gothika, and we had lunch with the director and Halle Berry," Susan told The Hollywood Reporter of getting to know Robert. "He brought his own packets of oatmeal to have at lunch. And he had this box of various herbs and stuff. And then he started doing these yoga moves. I mean, he was interesting but weird."
The couple got engaged in 2004 and shared the story of their engagement on The Oprah Winfrey Show. "It was her birthday and I wanted to get her before she turned 30, so I waited right before midnight, and I got her a bunch of stuff and then there was a ring," Robert told Winfrey. "And she opened that, and I said … What did I say?" Susan answered, "'I was wondering if, maybe, you'd wanna, like, be my wife one day.' " They got married in 2005, nearly two years after getting engaged.
Robert Downey Jr swore off drugs for Susan
In the 1990s and the early 2000s, the 'Chaplin' star battled a significant drug addiction that put his career and personal life in danger. He attributes his recovery to his wife. However, Susan declined to take credit and told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview, "If anybody has ever dealt with someone with addiction, you know it has nothing to do with someone else. They have to be ready. If you can be a small part of creating an alternative world for them that says, 'Hey, I’m here. If you are clean, great.' But there’s no credit I will ever take other than basically saying, 'Here’s what I need to have happen,' or more importantly, 'What can’t be happening,' but it’s entirely that person."
The 'Avengers' actor recalled that moment of truth as "the clearest conversation I've had my entire life. You know when someone is being so clear with you on something and you go 'there is zero go-room right now.... but ultimatums work!" Susan clarified, saying, "But they only work if the person's ready," to which the actor responded, "You made me ready."
