Phoebe Bridgers says Marilyn Manson had 'rape room', Internet shocked 'sicko' is godfather to Johnny Depp's child

While some tweets supported her decision to come forward with the story, there was a disturbingly large number of people who victim-blamed her for her experience as a teenager

Musician Phoebe Bridgers is the latest to have something to say about Marilyn Manson abusing women. According to her, she once went to his house with some friends and he said he had a “rape room". At the time, she was a "big fan". When he said that to her, she thought it was an example of his "frat boy sense of humor" and "stopped being a fan". She ended her tweet with the words: "I stand with everyone who came forward." She added: "The label knew, management knew, the band knew. Distancing themselves now, pretending to be shocked and horrified is fucking pathetic."

Tweets 'victim-blame' Phoebe Bridgers

While some tweets supported her decision to come forward with the story, there was a disturbingly large number of tweets that victim-blamed her for her experience as a teenager. For instance, in reply to her tweet about the band and management knowing about Manson's abusive behavior, one user tweeted: "You know who else knew??? Everyone who saw him or listened to his music. If 'Marilyn Manson is a sex freak' truly rocks your world, then I'm not sure you're ready to be an adult".

Another user replying to her wrote: "Did you wake up today and decide to be judge jury and executioner? Do YOU KNOW all the FACTS! Fucking sick of cunts pulling this guilty till proven innocent crap. And no, I don’t give a fuck about MM, I don’t like his music."

Echoing this 'why now' attitude, a tweet said: "Whining about it 10yrs later is fucking pathetic. People make choices, and at 19 she made her choice. It’s #MarilynManson what did you expect idiot," while another user remarked: "Hearsay until there’s evidence, or court documentation or something to go off because now it feels like everyone has a story."

The tweet thread quickly escalated into a debate about how cancel culture along with the #MeToo movement had affected men in society. Since Manson has been Johnny Depp's friend for decades, the Depp-Amber Heard fight was also rehashed on Bridgers' tweet thread. "Johnny Depp has this sicko as the God Father to his daughter. I think people should have a conversation about what kind of man he is too instead of always assuming the best in him and the worst in the wife he abused," said one tweet, while another user said: "don’t forget Manson volunteered to be a witness for Depp against Heard, probably because he wanted Depp to do the same for him when his own victims came forward. They’re both sickos". Another tweet said: "lol Johnny Depp had Marilyn Manson as the godfather to his daughter im pretty sure..... still not lookin great for him". 

However, others supported Depp in the thread saying his friendship with Manson did not make him automatically guilty. "That's an absolutely ridiculous conclusion to come to! I'm sure Ted Bundy had close friends, it doesn't mean they knew he was a serial or that they were serial killers themselves! Amber Heard had an affair with James Franco who is allegedly a rapist...does that make her a rapist?" said one irate tweet about comparing Manson and Depp. Another user said: "...applying a 'guilty by association' tag to Depp, which is incredibly unfair. The most notoriously evil people in history had close friends who knew nothing about their hidden penchants'. Depp is a victim of Amber Heard's, do not forget that."

Amber Heard herself had tweeted about the Manson case earlier, linking to a New Yorker article about the 'Marilyn Manson Reckoning', saying: "and yet, no one sees the trend here? Everyone wants to tag a Bathroom wall, no one wants to understand the writing. Evan & I aren’t the 1st to raise our hands. Are you done ignoring it?"

Manson is not only godfather to Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose, Depp and Manson also have matching tattoos. Depp went on 24-hour coke and booze binge with Manson after dropping his daughter Lily-Rose at school as recently as July 2020. Depp has appeared in Manson’s videos such as 'Say10' and 'Kill4Me' and Manson has referred to Depp as his brother.
