For now, all we know is that they're working cases together, and are slowly coming to grips with how they approach a mission

This article contains spoilers for 'Pennyworth' episode 8: Sandie Shaw'

'Sandie Shaw' saw Alfred (Jack Bannon) murder people in cold blood. He wasn't happy about it, but he wasn't going to watch his girlfriend Esme's (Emma Corrin) killers just sit there. Meanwhile, the Raven Society led by Jason Flemyng's Lord Harwood is well on its way to establishing a new England. In our review of 'Sandie Shaw', we said the series still has a few loose ends that it needs to tie up by the end of season 1 and one of it is the relationship between Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) and Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge).

In 'Sandie Shaw', it looks like Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) is still not over the fact that he pummelled someone to the point of death. Kane asks him about his CIA connection to which there is no definite answer.  The hesitancy between the two gives rise to a lot of questions. The duo were first seen to be working together in Episode 4, 'Lady Penelope'. It appeared that Wayne is part of the No-Name League and Martha works for him. Later it was revealed that Wayne was working for the CIA.

However, the show is yet to show how the duo ends up marrying in the days to come. For now, all we know is that they're working cases together, and are slowly coming to grips with how they approach a mission. While there was a brief romantic moment that Kane shared with Alfred, it pretty much looks like a closed chapter as the series has shown minimal interaction between the duo ever since.

The last two episodes of 'Pennyworth' have a lot of threads to tie up. Starting off with how the Raven Society decides to establish their order and how it impacts the Prime Minister and the Queen. The No- Name League too has a plan up its sleeve that is yet to be revealed with Jack Ripper planning something sinister. Add to this the relationship angle between Kane and Wayne. For now, we're pretty sure the series will have at least another couple of seasons and it's highly likely that the Kane-Wayne relationship subplot may take a while to be explained.

At the moment, it is safe to assume that the events at the end of season 1 will pan out in a way that Alfie, Wayne, and Kane eventually end up working together. This could also mean Alfred working for Wayne in the days to come and probably take Kane's place. That leaves season 2 to do a chunk of explaining to do with how Martha and Thomas move forward on a personal level.

'Pennyworth' airs Sundays on EPIX at 9 pm.
