An unpleasant surprise
As Varian Fry and Mary Jayne Gold continue their rescue mission of artists and writers fleeing the Nazis and immigrating to the United States, they get new members to assist them. As the two find a new path through the new addition Lisa, they set to transport philosopher Walter Benjamin and some other important members. But before carrying out the mission, Varian receives an unpleasant surprise as the Hôtel Splendide gets raided by the German officers. Thanks to a surprise guest, the journalist gets a prior warning. He and his team, within time, manages to get Benjamin out of the Hotel.
A new policy
With his hands full already for finding a new office after the raid on Hôtel Splendide, Varian's old friend Thomas comes to his rescue. The refugees settled in at Villa Air-Bel. He meets Hiram Bingham, who fills him about the new policy set out by Graham Patterson. The policy states giving no visa to any British POWs, Jews, and Pinkos. It comes as a surprise for Varian, who is tackling many issues at a time. ‘Transatlantic’ is streaming now on Netflix.
