'Vikings: Valhalla': Netflix orders new sequel series from Michael Hirst's epic Viking saga

The streaming network is all set to launch a sequel to the hit series which will air its final season on History channel this December and will continue to tell the story of the legendary warriors, albeit with a fresh perspective.

The ‘Vikings’ have been ruling the screen on History Channel for over five seasons now. This December, as the show premieres its final season, the stories of Ragnar Lothbrok and his clan will wrap up. But for all lovers of Vikings and their culture, there’s good news.

Netflix is taking the initiative of launching a sequel to the 'Viking' saga which will start airing on the streaming service once ‘Vikings’ Season 6 ends. According to Hollywood Reporter, ‘Viking’s original creator Michael Hirst and studio MGM Television have teamed up to extend the historic experience in an all-new series called ‘Vikings: Valhalla’. While it might seem like an all-new show, the plot pretty much takes off from where the original ‘Vikings’ end, making it almost like a sequel.

Almost after a century has passed from the times of Bjorn Ironside and Ivar The Boneless, ‘Vikings: Valhalla’ will follow the adventures and exploits of the later generation warriors who lived to see the evolution of their communities. The sequel will focus on Vikings legends like Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror (also a Viking descendant), as they take on new conquests and embark on a whole new journey, fighting for their world and their values, and become an integral part of Europe’s medieval history. The expansion of the Byzantine Empire and invasions of Arabs that we saw in the last couple of seasons in the ‘Vikings’ will take prominence in the sequel.

As promised by writer and executive producer Jeb Stuart, ‘Vikings: Valhalla’ will be more thrilling, exciting, dramatic, and explosive, that will see the Vikings in a more modern setting, as times and tide continue to change around the world in 900 AD. As per industry reports, Netflix has initial plans for a 24-episode series, but the release date has not yet been updated.

Stay tuned as we bring you more news and information on Netflix’s upcoming epic. In the meantime, catch the final chapter of the ‘Vikings’, as Ragnar’s son Bjorn Ironside takes the throne and takes Kattegat to a whole new dimension and discovers new lands with his tribe.

‘Vikings’ Season 6 premieres on December 4, 2019, only on the History channel.
