'Nancy Drew' Episode 4: Who is Bess and what is she doing in Horseshoe Bay?
Spoilers ahead for season 1 episode 4 'The Haunted Ring'
We had been waiting for a long time - since the season premiere actually - to know exactly who is Bess (Maddison Jaizani) and why does she have Tiffany Hudson's (Sinead Curry) ring in her possession.
Last week's episode ended with Nancy (Kennedy McMann) discovering that Bess has Tiffany's ring and is worried that she might have invited a killer in her house. Episode 4 'The Haunted Ring' begins with Nancy and Bess waking up to the house haunted - there are sounds coming from everywhere, the electronic appliances in the house just start up on their own and then the glass shatters when they shut down. They can't fathom what is happening and Bess is freaking out about there being a ghost in the house. Nonetheless, they retire for the night with Nancy thinking that the house is being haunted because of Bess.
The next morning, Carson asks Nancy about Bess, who tells him that she is apparently a Marvin. Which prompts him to inquire about her aunt Diana's health after the surgery. Bess, clearly caught off-guard with this question just responds that she's fine. The day at the Claw goes about as usual with Bess, Nancy and George going about their day. A still freaked out Bess takes a break and goes to the storage room to calm herself down. Inside, she pulls out Tiffany's ring and wears it, eventually gaining control over her anxiety.
But she hears sounds emanating from the vents. Suddenly, Nancy and George hear a loud scream from the supply room. When they get there, they see things fallen off the shelves and Bess lying down the floor with claw marks on both her calves writhing in pain.
Bess is being haunted by a ghost.
Later Nancy rummages through Bess' locker to find out who exactly she is and finds a British passport identifying Bess as Bess Tarani. When Bess finds her, she is furious that Nancy had no regards for her privacy but nothing is disclosed here. It is at Tiffany's funeral that Bess tells Nancy that she thinks she is a Marvin - when living in a shoddy part of East London, her mother had told her stories of the Marvins, a family they descended from. All Bess wanted to do was know the Marvins. And that is the reason that she is in Horseshoe Bay.
So we all knew that Bess is not who she claimed to be. What's weirder is that the police didn't even bother to find out anything about her when adding her on the suspect list. The question now is how will Bess' true identity affect the plotline?
