Marie Nicholson's sound, which is sometimes referred to as "go-go," was exploited at the time by artists like Beyonce and J Lo on the song '1 Thing', which was on the singer's sophomore album, 'Touch'. Since some claim that Beyonce's song 'Crazy in Love' sounds uncannily similar to Amerie's '1 Thing', and Bey is accused of "hijaking her sound," Bey is now being brought up in this issue. Rich Harrison, the same producer who gave them their same sound, produced both. At the time, Harrison also collaborated with Beyonce's Destiny's Child bandmates Mary J Blige, Kelly Rowland, and Toni Braxton, as reported by TMZ.
In Washington, DC, the birthplace of the go-go subgenre, Nicholson first met Harrison. The sound is also well-known throughout DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia). Although this back and forth has been going on for a long, the BeyHive denies Bey's assertion that she copied Nicholson's sound. Mainly because 'Crazy In Love' came out before '1 Thing', it is said that Harrison produced Marie Nicholson's song first before meeting Bey and Kelly Rowland through Bey's father, Matthew Knowles.
