CANNES, FRANCE: Michael Douglas, the legendary actor with over fifty movies to his credit, has expressed concerns about how social media has encroached on privacy, stating that they no longer feel free. The actor, known for his role in 'Basic Instinct,' revealed that his close friend Leonardo DiCaprio shares the same apprehensions.

The 78-year-old actor made a red carpet appearance at the 76th Annual Cannes Film Festival, accompanied by his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 53, and their daughter Carys, 20. In April, they celebrated Carys' birthday, and Douglas posted a picture with a heartfelt caption, saying, "To my darling Carys, wishing you a happy birthday! Now that you are leaving your teens, may this be a wonderful New Year for you, darling! I love you, Dad."

'Things have changed a lot with social media'

He recently shared pictures on Instagram from Cannes as he was honored, stating, "Thank you Cannes! I am so honored to receive the Honorary Palme d’Or at @festivaldecannes for my career achievements. Catherine, Carys, and I had a wonderful time celebrating last night! #Cannes2023."

The 'Ant-Man' star expressed to the Daily Mail, "Things have changed a lot with social media - before social media, you had more secrets." He lamented the loss of freedom he once had, saying, "I don't have the same freedom that I had before social media came into existence." Reflecting on earlier times, he added, "You were able to have quiet gatherings together without everyone knowing." The actor's Instagram account boasts over 1.1 million followers.

'You don't have that kind of freedom as before'

Douglas further shared with the outlet, "Now, wherever you go - I was talking to Leonardo DiCaprio about that - you get spotted, and then people start texting about it, and the next thing you know, there are a hundred, then a thousand people connecting." He added, "You don't have that kind of freedom as before."

'I believe family is important'

Highlighting the significance of his family, the 'Fatal Attraction' star expressed, "I believe family is important, regardless of the industry you're in, and it's crucial to support one another. Families can also drive you crazy, and every situation is unique." He also shared the joy of having Carys and Catherine alongside him at the Cannes Film Festival, stating, "Catherine, my wife, has a close and strong bond with her family. We are a tight-knit unit. I have an older son, 42, from my first marriage, and our relationship is close."

He further said, "To have an event like this and to not be able to share it with anyone will be a big disappointment. To be able to be out there and have your daughter see you do this and the fact that she wants to be an actress too. She's a wonderful actress, I can't imagine the third generation the pressure they're under. Family means a lot to me. I'm not really good on my own."
